The “Black Train” from Tifton, GA is on a serious roll in the Georgia Barbecue Assocation. Fresh off a Grand Championship earlier this month in their hometown contest, Smokin’ 42 BBQ made it two Grands in a row with a win at the Durhamtown Moonshiners BBQ Festival in Union Point, GA.  As in Tifton, the team’s Pork Loin entry was the highest scoring box in the finals round.

Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack made finals in all three categories at Durhamtown. That strong overall performance earned the Reserve Grand Champion trophy wotj the highest cumulative score in the three preliminary rounds.  In the preliminary Ribs competition, TC’s BBQ recorded a perfect score to become the newest member of the GBA’s 600 club.

Smokin’ 42 BBQ’s Grand Championship Pork Loin entry led the way in the category. Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack was the runner up. H & J Cooking Crew took third place. Clay & Sephanie Beal of Old Henry’s BBQ got the fourth place call with Bubba Grills rounding out the top five.

 

Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack had the best Pulled Pork box of the day. Smokin the Good Stuff came in second with H & J Cooking Crew once again finishing third. TC’s BBQ captured fourth place. Bubba Grills took fifth place just a half point ahead of Rub My Butt.

 

29 Barbecue and Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack tied for first Ribs.  29 Barbecue took the top spot on the first tiebreaker. TC’s BBQ came in third place. Old Henry’s BBQ got their second fourth place call of the day and Bubba Grills took fifth place for the third time in the contest.

 

The GBA also sanctioned a Cooking for Fun contest at Durhamtown.  Screaming Eagle took first place in Pulled Pork with Southern Accent taking second place. Komado Kommandos scored a perfect 600 in the Ribs contest with Screaming Eagle as runner up.  Screaming Eagle had the highest cumulative score for the two categories to claim the Grand Championship.

 

The Georgia Barbecue Association would like to thank the Durhamtown Plantation staff for their outstanding hospitality and for putting together a great contest at a very unique venue.

 

The next stop on the GBA contest  trail will be Bikes, Blues & BBQ in Douglas on March 28 & 29. In April the GBA will return to Jackson, Ga for Smokin’ Pork N Butts on April 18-19.  In May, the GBA heads to Hazlehurst for the Three Rivers BBQ Fest on May 2-3 then the following weekend will be in Acworth for Smoke on the Lake on May 9-10.

D.W.’s Kountry Cookers Take Team of the Year

2011-2012 Team of the Year – D.W.’s Kountry Cookers

D.W.’s Kountry Cookers were honored as the GBA 2011-2012 Team of the Year this weekend at the ComSouth Hambone Jam in Fort Valley, GA.  The team was honored with the Team of the Year banner and a check from Team of the Year sponsor Stump’s Smokers.

The Team of the Year race came right down to the wire.  With just 2 contests remaining,  D.W.’s was tied with Jack’s New South for first place.  At Fernandina Beach, D.W.’s took 2nd in both ribs & pork along with the reserve grand award to open up a 17 point lead.  At the final contest of the year in Plains, Jack’s New South rallied with a first in ribs, second in loin and the grand championship for a total of 30 points.  D.W.’s first place in loin and 4th place in pork was good for 22 points and secured the title.

Jack’s New South was the runner up with Sunset Smokers, Holy Smokers and Sauced Hogs Smokeshack rounding out the Top 5 teams for the year.  Finishing 6th thru 10th in the overall standings were Smokin the Good Stuff, Bubba Grills, Holy Smokes, SmokinWilly Squealers and Bethel Smokers.

Team of the Year Update

D.W.’s Kountry Cookers had two 2nd place finishes and the Reserve Grand Championship at Fernandina Beach break out of a tie with Jack’s New South for first place in the Team of the Year standings.  D.W.’s have a 17 point lead heading into the last contest of the season in Plains on June 28-29.  There were no other changes in the top five.  Smoking the Good Stuff continued their steady climb in the standings to sixth just one point out of fifth place.  Bethel Smokers win in Pork at Fernandina moved them into a tie for 10th place.

Pitmaster Larry Johns of L J Smokin’ captured his first Grand Championship at GBA Goin’ Coastal in Fernandina Beach, FL. The team’s rib finals entry was judged the best of the day just 0.3 of a point ahead of the rib entry by D.W.’s Kountry Cookers. It was the first Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) contest outside the state of Georgia.  D.W.’s Kountry Cookers continued their climb to the top of the GBA Team of the Year standings by taking home the Reserve Grand Championship.

L J Smokin’ won the Pork Loin Category with Legal Smoke BBQ as runner up and Smokin’ the Good Stuff in third place. It went to the second tiebreaker to award 4th place to Team Two Eggheads with Rib Ranch taking 5th place.

In Pulled Pork, Bethel Smokers took first place honors. D.W.’s Kountry Cookers came in 2nd place. Third place went to Sunset Smokers. Bubba Grills and Legal Smoke BBQ finished in 4th & 5th respectively.

L J Smokin’s Ribs topped the field just ahead of D.W’s Kountry Cookers. Bubba Grills came in third. Legal Smoke BBQ took 4th place to give Pitmaster Nathan Deaton a top 5 finish in all three categories. Smokin’ 42 BBQ rounded out the top 5.
