Georgia Barbecue Association Election FAQ
What positions are available?
The Georgia Barbecue Association has two elected positions: President and Vice President.
Who can run?
Any current member in good standing with the GBA for at least one year may run for either position.
How do I announce my intent to run for one of the offices?
You must send a Letter of Intent to the Chairman of the Georgia Barbecue Board of Directors between April 1 and April 15 of the election year. See the GBA Contact page for contact information.
You can send your letter via email or standard postal mail. If using email, you’d send it to the Chairman of the Board as found on the GBA Contact page. If using postal mail, you’d send it to the attention of the GBA Chairman of the Board at the postal address found on the GBA Contact page.
Letters sent by postal mail must be postmarked between April 1 and April 15. Letters sent by email must be received by the GBA Chairman of the Board between the same date. Letters sent prior to or after those dates will be rejected.
Your letter of intent must state the position you are seeking, your GBA Membership number, and your contact information. Contact information must include your email address, physical address, and phone number.
If I’m elected, what would my duties be?
The duties of both President and Vice President can be found here. Note these documents are intended as guidelines; the President and Vice President would be expected to work together to complement each other for the betterment of the GBA.
How long would I serve?
Both the President and Vice President serve 2 year terms. There are currently no limits to the number of consecutive terms which can be served by a single individual.
When would my term begin and end?
The terms for President and Vice President begin at the end of the GBA Annual Banquet in the election year. Immediately after the banquet is concluded, the President and Vice President would “hand off” their duties to the newly elected members.
Would I become a member of the GBA Board of Directors?
The President and Vice President are awarded voting rights and an accompanying seat on the Board of Directors for the duration of their terms. Voting rights and the accompanying seat on the GBA Board are terminated when those terms expire.
Note also that voting rights and the accompanying seat on the GBA board may also be terminated for cause if a 2/3 majority of the GBA Board of Directors vote to remove those rights.
When, Where, and How are Elections held?
Currently elections are held June 1 to June 15. Elections are conducted on the GBA website, in the member section. In order to vote, you must have registered on the GBA website. Members will be notified prior to June 1 with specific instructions on voting.
Who can vote for President and Vice President?
Every current member of the GBA is allowed to cast a single vote for the position of President and a single vote for the position of Vice President. The President and Vice President do not run on a “ticket” like the US Presidential elections. Each position is filled independent of the other.
Can I vote more than once?
No. Any member who willfully attempts to cast multiple votes using any method, willfully attempts to circumvent the normal voting process to affect the outcome of an election, or willfully attempts to coerce others in any such endeavor will have their GBA membership revoked immediately and permanently.
How are the winners determined?
The person receiving the highest total vote count for each position is declared the winner
How and when will we know the winners?
Elections results are verified solely by the Georgia Barbecue Association Board of Directors. At their discretion, the board may release actual voting statistics.
Results will be posted on the Georgia Barbecue website no more than 10 days following the close of voting, and emails will be sent to all current GBA members informing them of the results.
