Holy Smokes take Grand at the South Georgia BBQ and Outdoor Festival

Holy Smokes wins Douglas

Forty-four teams traveled from 4 states to Douglas, Georgia on September 8, 2018 to compete in the first Georgia Barbeque Association sanctioned contest of the 2018-19 season. Not only did the teams fight for their share of $20,000 in prize money, but also an early advantage in the race for the GBA Team of the Year in this double point event.

When the smoke cleared, Holy Smokes took home the Grand Championship trophy and a check for $5,000 for their pork entry. Holy Smokes also won another $1,300 for their 5^th place loin, 1^st place pork, and 5^th place ribs. The trophy and $2,500 check for Reserve Grand Champion went to We Want Que, who finished 8^th in loin, 2^nd in pork, and 2^nd in ribs.

Forget Me Not won the Loin category, followed by Cobra Q and EZQ. EZQ received the highest possible score from the judges, a 600, for their preliminary loin entry. Cobra Q began last season as a cooking for fun team before stepping up to the pros late in the season.

The top three finishers in the Pork category were Holy Smokes, We Want Que, and Belly Up. Rescue Smokers won Ribs, followed by We Want Que, and Hold Your Horses BBQ.

Rescue Smokers also won the ancillary brisket category and a $1,000 check, followed by Pot’s BBQ, and Belly Up. This was the first GBA contest for Pots BBQ, who also finished 8^th in pork.

Rescue Smokers Crowned Grand Champion at Three Rivers Festival

Reserve Grand Champions Southern Hogs & Grand Champions Rescue Smokers

Hazlehurst — Robby Royal & Dannie Morris of Rescue Smokers had their Loin on point to win Grand Championship at the Three Rivers Festival. This was Rescue Smoker’s second Grand Championship at the Hazlehurst contest having also won the first contest in 2010.

Southern Hogs, led by Matt Sapp, put an big exclamation point on their 2017-2018 GBA Team of the Year campaign by making finals in all three categories & winning Reserve Grand Championship.

B’s BBQ Wins Grand at Golden’s Cast Iron BBQ Cook-off

Columbus — B’s BBQ won the Grand Championship with Loin at the first Golden’s Cast Iron BBQ Cook-off. Off the Chain BBQ made finals in all three categories to claim the Reserve Grand Championship.

Rescue Smokers Takes the Belt at Canton

Grand Champion – Rescue Smokers

Canton – Rescue Smokers not only won the Grand Championship at the Canton BBQ & Brews festival, they also captured the BBQ & Brews Championship Belt. It was Robby & Stephanie Royal’s Loin entry that topped the finals round for the Grand Championship. The belt was awarded to the highest cumulative scores from the 4 BBQ & Brews events. Rescue Smokers edged out Smokin’ the Good Stuff by 0.9 of a point. Smokin’ the Good Stuff made finals in Loin and had 6th place finishes in both Pork & Ribs to take the Reserve Grand Championship.

Rescue Smokers Flies High in Warner Robins

Grand Champion – Rescue Smokers

Warner Robins — Rescue Smokers, Robby & Stephanie Royal, won the Grand Championship at the first Robins Flying High BBQ Festival. Chuck & Carrie East, of Off the Chain BBQ, made finals in Loin & Pulled Pork along with a 4th place finish in Ribs to take the Reserve Grand Championship. Off The Chain also had a perfect 600 score in Loin preliminaries. Smoking the Good Stuff won the Loin category. Southern Hogs won the Ribs category.
