Bethel Smokers Tops Field at Grande Creek PigJam

Nineteen teams gathered at the Georgia Sports Arena in Swainsboro, GA for the first Grande Creek PigJam. The teams & judges found the new venue to be an execllent site for a BBQ competition. The GBA family and members of the Swainsboro community were treated to a concert on Friday night by The LACS. 

Mr Joe Wright of Bethel Smokers claimed first place in both Pulled Pork & Ribs to take home the Grand Championship.  His finals Ribs score of 595.4 was 0.3 of a point better than his finals Pulled Pork score to claim the top award of the day.

Smokin’ AJ’s Pitmaster Buster Davis had a strong showing in all three categories to win the Reserve Grand Championship. Buster’s top 3 finals calls in Loin & Pulled Pork along with a 9th place finish in Ribs was the highest overall score in the preliminary round.

Cookin’withStump.com took first place in the Pork Loin category just 0.6 of a point ahead of Butt Rubbin BBQ. Smokin AJs claimed third place with Budmeisters taking fourth.  Sauce Hogs Smokeshack edged out Dirt Road Grillin for fifth place by 0.3 of a point.

The finish in Pulled Pork was even closer than the Loin category as Bethel Smokers winning score was just 0.3 of a point better than Bubba Grills. Smokin AJs once again took third place. Butt Rubbin BBQ finished fourth with Cookin’ with Stump.com in fifth place.

Bethel Smokers topped the field in the Ribs category with Shadetree Smokers as runner up. Smokin Butts took home the third place award. Just a single point separated fourth and fifth place with Rump Burners just ahead of Butt Rubbin BBQ.

When you say Budmeisters ….

When you say Budmeisters …

At Pigs & Wings 2013 in Perry, GA,  the crowd heard Budmeisters called often and most importantly, last.  42 teams persevered almost constaant rain for the 2 days to turn in great barbecue.

Pitmaster Thomas Henry’s team became just the third team in GBA history to win all three GBA categories en route to the Grand Championship. Budmeisters also won the Overall Championship for the contest that went to the team with the highest cumulative score of the the GBA categories of Pork Loin, Pulled Pork & Ribs along with ancillary categories of Brisket and Chicken.

Budmiester’s dominating performance created a pass down for Reserve Grand Championship. With a 2nd in Loin, 8th in Pork and 14th in Ribs; Chris Coleman & Dirty South BBQ claimed the Reserve Grand Championship.

Following Budmeisters and Dirty South BBQ in Pork Loin was Anarque in third place. Fouth place went to D.W.’s Kountry Cookers with Sauced Hogs Smokeshack in fifth place.  Runner up in Pork was D.W.s Kountry Cookers. Killer B’s BBQ took third place and Que the Music claimed fourth. Forest’s Fine Foods edged Bethel Smokers for fifth place by 0.3 of a point. Superior Smokers had the second place Rib entry for the day.  Bethel Smokers, Shadetree BBQ & Soithern Paradise finished third thru fifth respectively.

World Food Championship Announcement

The Georgia Barbecue Association is pleased to announce in conjunction with The World Food Championships that the GBA now has an invitation for :


The Georgia State Champion in Ft Valley, Com South Hambone Jam
Statesboro Music Festival, Statesboro Ga   ( both GBA and MBN teams)
Breanau Barbecue Championship, Gainesville Ga  (both GBA and MBN teams)
GBA Goin Costal, Fernandina Beach  Florida

As you may remember last year we were well represented by only one team and this year we will be represented by FOUR teams.

Way to GO! to the Georgia Barbecue Association and remember, “It’s All About The Taste”!!!

Registration for Statesboro Judge Class now open

Registration for the Judge Training Class to be held in Statesboro on February 16, 2013 is now open.  Sign in will begin at 1:00 pm. The class will begin at 2:30 pm.  The location of the class will be announced soon. Please go to the contest page for the link to the class application form.

The fee for the class is $25 per person.  You must be a member of the GBA to take the class.  Membership fee for the GBA is $35/year for individuals or $50/year for a family of two.  You may pay your class fee & membership fee at the class.

On behalf of the Georgia Barbecue Association, I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and will have a happy & prosperous New Year.

The GBA has experienced tremendous growth over the past couple of years. We have held contests in many new venues and have trained many new judges. With growth comes the necessity to develop better, more efficient procedures. Beginning with Pigs & Wings in February, we are implementing a new application process for judges.

Our goal is to provide a judge application process that is consistent from contest to contest. The process will also give us a tool to fairly manage the number of judges at each contest with the goal of each judge being seated for at least two of the three GBA categories.

From this point forward Contest organizers will no longer mail applications out.  Judges may apply to be confirmed to Judge only by completing the application on the GBA Website.  Only Judge Applications submitted using the electronic process at the GBA Website will be accepted.  Links to the forms will be on the contest page of the GBA website.

Please remember, submitting an electronic application through the GBA Website does not guarantee you will be selected to judge at the contest.

All submissions will be given to the Lead Contest Representative who will work with the Contest Organizer to manage the Judge Selection process. Consideration will be given to those who sign up early, but that is not the only criteria used in selecting judges.

Approximately two weeks prior to the contest date, the lead GBA Representative will send out confirmation notices by email to the judges who have been selected.  It is your responsibility to be sure you enter your correct email address on the form.  Should an email bounce, the Rep will make one attempt to reach the judge by phone before selecting a replacement. Additional confirmations may be sent closer to the contest date should more teams sign up.

If you are confirmed to judge at a contest and cannot fulfill the commitment, it is imperative you contact the Lead Contest Representative by 8:00 AM on the morning of the contest.  Failing to appear at a contest you have been confirmed to judge without giving notice will decrease your chances of being selected in the future.  Should it happen a second time, you may be removed from consideration for the remainder of the contest year.

You are welcome to come to the contest even if do not receive a confirmation to judge.  If you do come with out a judging confirmation, please assume that you will not be needed to judge.  You may choose to place your name on a standby list the morning of the contest.  If we have reason to need replacement judges the Lead Contest Representative may use the standby list to seat a Judge who wasn’t invited. You may also volunteer to assist with turn-ins, table setup, etc.

The judge application form for Pigs & Wings will be posted on the GBA website on Thursday, December 27.   Forms for other contests will be posted in early January.
