Fiddler’s BBQ Breaks Thru at Smoke on the Lake

A few weeks ago at Jackson, Fiddler’s BBQ made finals in all three categories and took first in Loin & Pulled Pork.  However, Bubba Grills’ Rib entry denied Harvey & Shirley Wills the last call.  At Smoke on the Lake at Acworth, Fiddler’s only made finals in Pulled Pork, but the entry was stong enough to bring home a score of 599 and the Grand Championship.

Brad Sweet of 92/Assassin Smokers scored a perfect 600 in both Loin and Ribs in the preliminary rounds to record the highest cumulative score for the contest and capture the Reserve Championship. It was the first time a single team has received perfect scores in two different categories in the same contest.  Bubba Grills did hit the 600 mark in both the preliminaries and finals in Ribs at Gordon in 2012.

In Pork Loin, Just Blowing Smoke won the final’s table with 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers taking 2nd place and Smokin The Good Stuff taking third.  Fourth place went to Fiddler’s BBQ;; 5th place went to We Want Que and 6th place went to Plum Superior BBQ. CJ’s BBQ took 7th place with Smart Ash BBQ taking eighth.  Curley Que BBQ made 9th place and SmokeShack BBQ rounded out the top 10.

Fiddler’s BBQ Grand Championship Pulled Pork entry topped the category with Swineholio as the runner-up and CJ’s BBQ in third place. Plum Superior BBQ finished in 4th just ahead of 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers in 5th place. Just Blowing Smoke walked for 6th place and Smoking the Good Stuff got the 7th place call.  Eighth thru 10th places went to We Want Que, SmokeShack BBQ and Four Fathers BBQ Crew respectively.

 

Winning Ribs was 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers.  Plum Superior BBQ claimed 2nd place and Smoking Butts BBQ claimed third.  Smokin the Good Stuff took 4th place.  Fifth place went to Rub Shakers Que and 6th place in Ribs went to Swineholio. We Want Que waked for the third time with the 7th place call and Porkinator got their first call of the day for 8th place.  Just Blowing Smoke took 9th place and 10th place went to Fiddler’s BBQ.

 

 

Smoke on the Lake also hosted a GBA sanctioned Cooking for Fun contest.  Hickory Flat BBQ won the Grand Championship and Nice Rack BBQ won the Reserve Championship.

Hickory Flat BBQ won the Chicken category with East Coast BBQ taking 2nd place and YMCA Spirit, Mind & Body BBQ taking 3rd place.  Nice Rack BBQ took top honors in Pulled Pork. Liberty BBQ was the runner up and Its Hog Gone Good got the 3rd place call.  Hickory Flat BBQ picked up their second 1st place trophy for Ribs, Dawgs Smokin Hawgs came in 2nd with Nice Rack BBQ coming in 3rd place.

The GBA thanks the North Cobb Rotary Club for organizing Smoke on the Lake and the citizens of Acworth for their amazing support of the event.  Each year the Rotary club raises thousands for thier charity projects.  Next  up for the GBA is  White Oak Pastures BBQ Challenge in Fort Gaines on May 22-23.

South Cobb BBQ & Blues Gets Smoked Rescue Style

Robby Royal and Rescue Smokers,of BBQ Pitmasters fame, took first place in both Pulled Pork and Ribs at the South Cobb BBQ & Blues Festival.  It was his near perfect score of 599.1 in the Pulled Pork finals round that netted the team the Grand Championship

Just Blowing Smoke, Robin Bowles PItmaster, made finals in Loin; finished 5th in Pulled Pork and 7th in Ribs to take home the Reserve Championship.

The first category of the contest was Loin and Just Blowing Smoke topped the field. Butt Rubbin BBQ took second place and 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers took third.  Rescue Smokers actually tied for third place but lost the tiebreaker to miss finals and finished in fourth place. Hard Rock Hill BBQ came in fifth place with Dixie Que in sixth. Smokin Butts BBQ took seventh; Rub Shakers Que took eighth; Fiddlers BBQ took ninth and We Want Que took 10th place.

Rescue Smokers won the Pulled Pork category with CJ’s as runner-up. We Want Que grabbed third place with 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers in fourth and Just Blowing Smoke in fifth place.  There was a tie for sixth place and Fiddler’s BBQ won the tiebreaker over Dixie Que. Rub Shakers Que,  Smokin’ the Good Stuff and Hard Rock Hill BBQ finished eighth through tenth respectively.

It was Rescue Smokers taking their second win of the day with the top scoring Rib box.  Rub Shakers Que came in second with Smokin’ The Good Stuff coming in third. Fiddlers BBQ took fourth; Smoking J’s took fifth place and Dixie Que took sixth place. Seventh place went to Just Blowing Smoke. The final three calls in Ribs were very close. Butt Rubbin’ BBQ got the eighth place call by just 0.2 of a point over We Want Que in ninth. Just 0.1 of a point back was Daddy-O’s BBQ in tenth place.

 

 

The Georgia Barbecue Association really enjoyed their first trip to Austell and the South Cobb BBQ & Blues Festival  We want to thank the contest organizers and the staff of the beautiful EpiCenter for hosting a great contest.  Next week, the GBA heads to MIlledgeville for the Deep Roots Fesitval

Bethel Smokers Tops Field at Grande Creek PigJam

Nineteen teams gathered at the Georgia Sports Arena in Swainsboro, GA for the first Grande Creek PigJam. The teams & judges found the new venue to be an execllent site for a BBQ competition. The GBA family and members of the Swainsboro community were treated to a concert on Friday night by The LACS. 

Mr Joe Wright of Bethel Smokers claimed first place in both Pulled Pork & Ribs to take home the Grand Championship.  His finals Ribs score of 595.4 was 0.3 of a point better than his finals Pulled Pork score to claim the top award of the day.

Smokin’ AJ’s Pitmaster Buster Davis had a strong showing in all three categories to win the Reserve Grand Championship. Buster’s top 3 finals calls in Loin & Pulled Pork along with a 9th place finish in Ribs was the highest overall score in the preliminary round.

Cookin’withStump.com took first place in the Pork Loin category just 0.6 of a point ahead of Butt Rubbin BBQ. Smokin AJs claimed third place with Budmeisters taking fourth.  Sauce Hogs Smokeshack edged out Dirt Road Grillin for fifth place by 0.3 of a point.

The finish in Pulled Pork was even closer than the Loin category as Bethel Smokers winning score was just 0.3 of a point better than Bubba Grills. Smokin AJs once again took third place. Butt Rubbin BBQ finished fourth with Cookin’ with Stump.com in fifth place.

Bethel Smokers topped the field in the Ribs category with Shadetree Smokers as runner up. Smokin Butts took home the third place award. Just a single point separated fourth and fifth place with Rump Burners just ahead of Butt Rubbin BBQ.
