Fiddler’s BBQ Breaks Thru at Smoke on the Lake

A few weeks ago at Jackson, Fiddler’s BBQ made finals in all three categories and took first in Loin & Pulled Pork. However, Bubba Grills’ Rib entry denied Harvey & Shirley Wills the last call. At Smoke on the Lake at Acworth, Fiddler’s only made finals in Pulled Pork, but the entry was stong enough to bring home a score of 599 and the Grand Championship.

Grand Champion – Fiddler’s BBQ

Brad Sweet of 92/Assassin Smokers scored a perfect 600 in both Loin and Ribs in the preliminary rounds to record the highest cumulative score for the contest and capture the Reserve Championship. It was the first time a single team has received perfect scores in two different categories in the same contest. Bubba Grills did hit the 600 mark in both the preliminaries and finals in Ribs at Gordon in 2012.

Reserve Champion – 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers

In Pork Loin, Just Blowing Smoke won the final’s table with 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers taking 2nd place and Smokin The Good Stuff taking third. Fourth place went to Fiddler’s BBQ;; 5th place went to We Want Que and 6th place went to Plum Superior BBQ. CJ’s BBQ took 7th place with Smart Ash BBQ taking eighth. Curley Que BBQ made 9th place and SmokeShack BBQ rounded out the top 10.

1st Place Loin – Just Blowing Smoke

Fiddler’s BBQ Grand Championship Pulled Pork entry topped the category with Swineholio as the runner-up and CJ’s BBQ in third place. Plum Superior BBQ finished in 4th just ahead of 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers in 5th place. Just Blowing Smoke walked for 6th place and Smoking the Good Stuff got the 7th place call. Eighth thru 10th places went to We Want Que, SmokeShack BBQ and Four Fathers BBQ Crew respectively.

Winning Ribs was 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers. Plum Superior BBQ claimed 2nd place and Smoking Butts BBQ claimed third. Smokin the Good Stuff took 4th place. Fifth place went to Rub Shakers Que and 6th place in Ribs went to Swineholio. We Want Que waked for the third time with the 7th place call and Porkinator got their first call of the day for 8th place. Just Blowing Smoke took 9th place and 10th place went to Fiddler’s BBQ.

Smoke on the Lake also hosted a GBA sanctioned Cooking for Fun contest. Hickory Flat BBQ won the Grand Championship and Nice Rack BBQ won the Reserve Championship.

Hickory Flat BBQ won the Chicken category with East Coast BBQ taking 2nd place and YMCA Spirit, Mind & Body BBQ taking 3rd place. Nice Rack BBQ took top honors in Pulled Pork. Liberty BBQ was the runner up and Its Hog Gone Good got the 3rd place call. Hickory Flat BBQ picked up their second 1st place trophy for Ribs, Dawgs Smokin Hawgs came in 2nd with Nice Rack BBQ coming in 3rd place.

The GBA thanks the North Cobb Rotary Club for organizing Smoke on the Lake and the citizens of Acworth for their amazing support of the event. Each year the Rotary club raises thousands for thier charity projects. Next up for the GBA is White Oak Pastures BBQ Challenge in Fort Gaines on May 22-23.

Bubba Grills Takes Grand at Smokin’ Pork N Butts

There are a couple of things you can count on at Smokin’ Pork N Butts in Jackson. Great BBQ and Rain. Mud boots were almost as essential as grills, charcoal & wood as steady rain pelted the event for most of the weekend. In spite of the challenging conditions, the teams still made the judges work hard to determine who had the best BBQ of the day.

Fiddlers BBQ made finals in all three categories. Southern Hogs finaled in Loin & Pulled Pork. However, it was Bubba Grills Rib entry that recorded the top score in the final rounds to claim the Grand Championship.

Grand Champion – Bubba Grills

Harvery & Shirley Wills of Fiddlers BBQ, with an assist from Master Judge candidate Greg Sebastian, “Triple Finaled” and accumulated the most points in the preliminary rounds to win the Reserve Champion award.

Reserve Champion – Fiddlers BBQ

Pork Loin is always a difficult category, but the scorers had to go to the tiebreaker to determine the winner in the category. Both Fiddler’s BBQ and LawDawg BBQ scored 594.4 in the final round of Loin judging. The GBA declares “Its All About the Taste” and the Taste scores are the first level in the tiebreaker. Fiddler’s BBQ had the highest taste score & edged LawDawg for first place. LawDawg BBQ had a perfect 600 score in the preliminary Loin round. Southern Hogs grabbed third place. Que the Musick took 4th place with Just Blowing Smoke taking fifth. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers took 6th place by winning the tiebreaker over Smokin J’s BBQ. Eighth place went to Bubba Grills; 9th place went to Smoke Shack BBQ and 10th went to Main Street BBQ.

Southern Hogs

In Pulled Pork, it was Fiddlers BBQ once again taking top honors. Southern Hogs finished as runner-up with Que the Musick in third place. Main Street BBQ got the 4th place call and Fletcher’s Finest got 5th place. Smokin the Good Stuff edged Real South BBQ for 6th place on the tiebreaker. Just Blowing Smoke also edged LawDawg BBQ in the tiebreaker for 8th place. Bubba Grills rounded out the top 10.

The Grand Championship winning Rib entry earned first place for Bubba Grills. Fiddlers BBQ completed their strong cook with the 2nd place award. Smokin the Good Stuff took 3rd place, but also had a perfect 600 score in the preliminary round. BCD (Boys Cooking Dangerously) came in 4th place. Hootie Q edged 29 BBQ by 0.1 of a point to take 5th place. Just Blowing Smoke captured 7th place and Smoke Shack BBQ captured 8th place. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers & Rub Shakers Que finished 9th & 10th respectively.

Once again Connie & Wayne Rosser of the Butt County Exchange Club did an outstanding job managing the contest in trying conditions. The GBA heads to the Three Rivers Festival and Towns Bluff Park on the Altamaha River in Hazlehurst on May 1-2. The following week it will be Smoke on the Water on beautiful Lake Acworth. The month of May completes the water based trifecta with the 1st Annual White Oak Pastures BBQ Challenge on Lake Walter F George in Fort Gaines on May 22-23.

Smokin’ 42 BBQ Defends Home Turf Again in Tifton

Twenty six Georgia Barbecue Associations teams gathered at Fulwood Park in Tifton, Ga for Rhythm & Ribs. The event in Tifton has become a favorite among the teams with a great venue and a large music and crafts festival to go along with the BBQ competition For the second year in a row, the hometown boys of Smokin’ 42 BBQ took home top honors by wining both the Loin & Pulled Pork categories and the Grand Championship. Chad Brooks and his crew were certainly on top of their game as they also recorded a perfect 600 score in the preliminary round of Pulled Pork. The event in Tifton has become a favorite among the teams with a great venue and a large music and crafts festival to go along with the BBQ competition

Robin Bowles and Just Blowing Smoke made finals in Pulled Pork and Ribs along with 8th place in Loin to capture the Reserve Grand Champion award.

Chad Brooks and Smokin 42 BBQ’s score of 596.7 was the top score among the three finalists in Loin to take first place. Captain Jack’s Fredom BBQ Team took seond place with 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers taking third place. Fourth place went to Bubba Grills with Dobey Q in fifth place. LawDawg BBQ won the tiebreaker over Stumps Smokers BBQ Team for 6th place. In eighth place was Just Blowing Smoke with H & J Cooking team in 9th and Holy Smokes rounding out the top 10.

Smokin’ 42 BBQ followed up the perfect 600 score in Pulled Pork preliminaries with a near perfect 599.1 score in the finals round to win the category. Stumps Smokers BBQ Team came in 2nd place with Just Blowing Smoke in third. Rub Shakers Que took 4th place by 0.3 of a point over Law Dawg BBQ. Swine Time Grilling Team won 6th place in the tiebreaker over H & J Cooking Team. Dobey Q captured 8th place. Bethel Smokers came in 9th with Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team in 10th place

Jimmy Hornbuckle and Swine Time Grilling Team turned in the best Rib box of the day. Captain Jacks Freedom BBQ Team was the runner up with Just Blowing Smoke finishing in 3rd place and Bethel Smokers finishing in 4th place. Stumps Smokers BBQ Teams won the tiebreaker to take 5th place over H & J Cooking Team. J Dub Stew & Que grabbed 7th place and . Dobey Q took 8th place. It was Real South BBQ & Holy Smokes coming in 9th & 10 places respectively.

Rythm & Ribs also held a non-sanctioned backyard contest. Kason Gray of Wicked Lickin’ BBQ Team got the Grand Championship call for the second year in a row.

The GBA heads north for the Hitiachi Walton Co BBQ Festival on March 13.14 followed by Durhamtown Spring Jam & BBQ Cookoff on March 20-21.

A Smoking Good Birthday for Lawdawg BBQ

Grand Champion – Lawdawg BBQ

Kerry Sparks of Lawdawg BBQ got the best birthday present a competition could want – their first Grand Championship. It wasn’t without some drama at the Hawkinsville Harvest Fest Pigs & Produce BBQ Contest. Lawdawg BBQ’s Loin entry and 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers’ Pulled Pork entry tallied the same total score in the finals round. On the first tiebreaker, compare scores for Taste, Lawdawg prevailed and the Sparks family team walked last at the awards Ceremony.

92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers made finals in all three categories to accumulate the highest total score in the three preliminary rounds and won the Reserve Champion award.

Old Henry’s BBQ

The Grand Champion Loin entry by Lawdawg BBQ topped the category. In the Loin preliminary round, Lawdawg BBQ tallied a perfect 600 score. Bill & Renee Goddard of Rub Shakers Que took second place and 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers took third place. Fourth place went to Old Henry’s BBQ. Daddy-O’s BBQ came in fifth, Kelvin’s BBQ came in sixth and Southern Hogs came in seventh place. Eighth thru tenth places went to Fat Jack’s BBQ, Real South BBQ and Bubba Grills respectively.

92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers topped the Pulled Pork category. Fat Jack’s BBQ, cooking in their first GBA contest, was the runner up. Lawdawg BBQ finished in third place. Fourth place again went to Clay & Stephanie Beal of Old Henry’s BBQ. Kelvin’s BBQ & Real South BBQ tied for fifth place with Kelvin’s winning on the 4th tiebreaker. Bubba Grills grabbed seventh place and Daddy-O’s BBQ grabbed eighth place. Southern Hogs and Rub Shakers Que rounded out the top 10.

Southern Hogs turned in the best Rib entry of the day. Fat Jack’s BBQ added to their big first GBA contest with a second place finish in Ribs. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers took third place. Bubba Grills came in fourth with Real South BBQ in fifth place. It was Old Henry’s BBQ claiming sixth place and Lawdawg BBQ claimed seventh place. Kelvin’s BBQ took eighth place, Rub Shakers Que took ninth and Daddy-O’s BBQ took tenth..

The Georgia Barbeque Association was proud to be a part of the Hawkinsville Harvest Fest for the third year. Next up on the GBA calendar is Albany Quail Classic on November 21-22 followed by the Moultrie Moose Lodge BBQ Cook-off on Dec 5-6.

South Cobb BBQ & Blues Gets Smoked Rescue Style

Robby Royal and Rescue Smokers,of BBQ Pitmasters fame, took first place in both Pulled Pork and Ribs at the South Cobb BBQ & Blues Festival. It was his near perfect score of 599.1 in the Pulled Pork finals round that netted the team the Grand Championship

Just Blowing Smoke, Robin Bowles PItmaster, made finals in Loin; finished 5th in Pulled Pork and 7th in Ribs to take home the Reserve Championship.

Butt Rubbin BBQ

The first category of the contest was Loin and Just Blowing Smoke topped the field. Butt Rubbin BBQ took second place and 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers took third. Rescue Smokers actually tied for third place but lost the tiebreaker to miss finals and finished in fourth place. Hard Rock Hill BBQ came in fifth place with Dixie Que in sixth. Smokin Butts BBQ took seventh; Rub Shakers Que took eighth; Fiddlers BBQ took ninth and We Want Que took 10th place.

CJs

Rescue Smokers won the Pulled Pork category with CJ’s as runner-up. We Want Que grabbed third place with 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers in fourth and Just Blowing Smoke in fifth place. There was a tie for sixth place and Fiddler’s BBQ won the tiebreaker over Dixie Que. Rub Shakers Que, Smokin’ the Good Stuff and Hard Rock Hill BBQ finished eighth through tenth respectively.

It was Rescue Smokers taking their second win of the day with the top scoring Rib box. Rub Shakers Que came in second with Smokin’ The Good Stuff coming in third. Fiddlers BBQ took fourth; Smoking J’s took fifth place and Dixie Que took sixth place. Seventh place went to Just Blowing Smoke. The final three calls in Ribs were very close. Butt Rubbin’ BBQ got the eighth place call by just 0.2 of a point over We Want Que in ninth. Just 0.1 of a point back was Daddy-O’s BBQ in tenth place.
