Bubba Grills Wins GBA State Championship

The Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) held its annual State Championship contest at the Deep Roots Festival in historic, downtown Milledgeville. Thirty two teams put their best efforts forward to take home a share of the $11,000 purse. Stumps Smokers sponsored an additional $1500 award to the overall GBA State Champion. Getting that coveted last call of the day as Deep Roots Festival Grand Champion and the GBA State Champion was Lonnie Smith and team Bubba Grills.

In the GBA, the team with the highest cumulative score across the three categories in the preliminary rounds is named the Reserve Grand Champion. CaJenn Smokin’ Que, led by pitmaster Billy Jennings, made finals in Pulled Pork along with 7th place in Loin and 6th place in Ribs to win the Reserve Grand Champion award.

Teams had to be on their “A” game right off the bat. The first category turned in is Pork Loin and the entry had to be close to perfect to advance to the finals round. In fact, the top 3 teams in the preliminary round all scored a 599.7 out of a possible 600. After the Loin Finals entries were scored by the panel of finals judges; Tim Coleman and his Real South BBQ team took top honors. We Want Q was the runner-up with 92 BBQ finishing in third place. Daddy O’s BBQ took 4th place; Smokin the Good Stuff took 5th and Southern Hogs took 6th place. Cajenn Smokin’ Que won the tiebreaker over Bubba Grills for 7th place. Rescue Smokers claimed 9th place and Smokin’ 42 BBQ claimed 10th place.

Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team, Jack & Sandy Fallin, won the Pulled Pork category. Cajenn Smokin’ Que got the 2nd place call. Real South BBQ walked for the second time by taking 3rd place. Raging Smoke BBQ grabbed 4th place. By just 0.3 of a point, 5 O’Clock Somewhere edged Dixe Que for 5th. Johnson Boys BBQ took home the 7th place award with Nature Boy BBQ grabbing 8th place. Smokin’ 42 BBQ and Rescue Smokers swapped placed this time with Smokin 42 BBQ in 9th and Rescue Smokers in 10th.

Bubba Grills State Championship Ribs won the final category of the day. Daddy O’s BBQ was 2nd with Simply Que in third place. Just Blowing Smoke took 4th place followed by Party Porkers in 5th and Cajenn Smokin’ Que in 6th place. Rescue Smokers took 7th place by 0.5 of a point over Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team. Smokin’ 42 BBQ and Raging Smoke BBQ rounded out the top 10.

The GBA wants to thank the city of Milledgeville for rolling out the red carpet once again all the GBA teams & judges. The Deep Roots Festival is one of the top festivals in the state of Georgia. Next the GBA heads to Wrightsville for the first time for Johnson County Wiggle & Twist on Halloweeen weekend.

Bubba Grills Takes Grand at Deep Roots Festival

Bubba Grills Edges Lawdawg BBQ for Grand at Deep Roots Festival

It was the first time the GBA sanctioned the BBQ competition at the Deep Roots Festival in Milledgeville and the excitement went right down to the wire. In the finals round, Bubba Grills rib entry and Lawdawg BBQ loin entry both tallied a 597.6 score as the best entry of the day. The GBA officials had to go to the tiebreak procedure and Bubba Grills took the win on the first level of the tiebreaker and captured the Grand Championship.

Just Blowing Smoke won the Reserve Championship for the second week in a row by getting a finals call in Loin along with 4th place in ribs and 6th place in Pulled Pork.

First Place Loin – Lawdawg BBQ

Lawdawg BBQ had the top entry in the Loin category. Just Blowing Smoke took 2nd place. Smokin’ Suwanee Sweetmeats cooking in their first GBA contest took 3rd place in the very difficult loin category. Fourth place with to Sweat’s BBQ with Bubba Grils in 5th place. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers finished in 6th, Ivey Rack and Q finished 7th and Party Porkers finished 8th. Swine Time Grilling (9th place) and Smokin’ Squealers rounded out the top 10.

92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers continued their strong run in the current GBA contest season by winning the Pulled Pork category. Bubba Grills was the runner up and another first time GBA competitor, Maxus Porkamus, was in 3rd place. Swine Time Grilling took 4th place. There was a tie for 5th place. It went to the fifth tiebreaker before Old Henry’s BBQ edged out Just Blowing Smoke. Seventh place was taken by Party Porkers. Smokin’ Suwanee Sweetmeats, Rotary Roasters and Dixie Que finished eighth, ninth & tenth respectively.

First place in Ribs went to Bubba Grills with Southern Hogs taking 2nd place. Once again,3rd place went to a team in their first GBA contest – Sensations Pigs. Just Blowing Smoke got the 4th place call with Baldwin Pork Authority getting the call for 5th place. In a tie for 6th place, Ivey Rack & Q got the nod over Lawdawg BBQ in the tiebreaker. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers took 8th place, Forget Me Not BBQ took 9th and Real South BBQ took 10th place.

The Georgia Barbecue Association was honored to be a part of such a great event in the Deep Roots Festival and look forward to coming back in 2015. Next up for the GBA is the Hawkinsville Harvest Fest on October 24 -25.

Bubba Grills is Perfection Times Two

Gordon, GA — Lonnie Smith, pitmaster of Bubba Grills, proved to be master of the perfect rib at the Fall Line Festival BBQ Contest. Not only did his team score a perfect 600 points in the Ribs preliminary round; he also claimed a perfect score in the Ribs Finals. Perfection times 2 equals a Grand Championship for Bubba Grills.

Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack placed first in Loin, 4th in Ribs and 8th in Pork in the preliminary rounds to win the Reserve Grand Championship.

In Pork Loin, Anarque, Holy Smokers and Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack were the three finalists. Anarque won the finals round and claim first place in the category. Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack took second with Holy Smokers in third. Bubba Grills took fourth place with SmokinWilly Squealers in fifth.

Anarque, Smokin AJs and SmokinWilly Squealers were the three finalists in Pulled Pork. Only 0.6 of a point separated first from third place in the finals. Anarque, once again, claimed the top score with SmokinWilly Squealers as runner up. Smoking AJ’s finished third. Party Porkers and Holy Smokers rounded out the top five.

Bubba Grills perfect preliminary score secured a spot in the Ribs Finals along with Five O’Clock Somewhere and Ivey Rack and Que. Bubba Grills again scored a perfect 600 in finals to take first place. Ivey Rack and Que and Five O’Clock Somewhere finished second and third respectively. Fourth went to Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack with fifth place going to Smokin AJs.
