Law Dawg BBQ Returns to Action & Walks Last

LawDawg BBQ Returns to Action & Walks Last

It had been almost a year since Kerry Sparks and LawDawg BBQ last entered a Georgia Barbecue Association competition. Smokin Pork N Butts in Jackson, GA was where the team returned to the pit wars and they proved the long layoff didn’t effect their skills. LawDawg BBQ won the Pork Loin category & edged out Pulled Pork winner Bubba Grills and Rib winner Rescue Smokers the last call and the Grand Championship.

Grand Champion – LawDawg BBQ

Robby Royal continued to dominate the circuit by making finals in both Loin and Ribs along with a 4th place finish in Pulled Pork. The strong overall cook gave the Sycamore, GA team the Reserve Grand Championship.

Reserve Grand Champion – Rescue Smokers

LawDawg BBQ took top honors in Loin with Rescue Smokers as the runner-up. Fletcher’s Finest advanced to finals on the strength of a perfect 600 score in the preliminary round and finished third. In 4th place was We Want Que and in 5th place was Johnson Boys BBQ. Screaming Eagle BBQ took 6th place, BCD took 7th place and Old Henry’s BBQ took 8th place. Quenut BBQ claimed 9th place and Southern Hogs was tenth.

First Place Pulled Pork – Bubba Grills

Bubba Grills topped the Pulled Pork category. Larry Cavendar & Screaming Eagle BBQ, a former Cooking for Fun division team, took 2nd place. Cavendar posted a perfect 600 score in the preliminary round, Hootie Q took 3rd place. Fourth place went to Rescue Smokers with Southern Hogs taking 5th place. Brown Owl BBQ, in their first competition, walked in 6th and Smoke Shack walked in 7th place. LawDawg BBQ, 92 BBQ and We Want Que finished 8th thru 10th respecitively.

In Ribs, three teams tied for 2nd place in the preliminary round. This meant the team losing the tiebreaker would miss the finals, Johnson Boys BBQ came up short on the tiebreaker finshed in 4th place. Rescue Smokers won the category, 92 BBQ came in second and had the third perfect 600 score in the preliminary rounds. Fletcher’s Finest came in third. Real South BBQ got the 5th place call. Bubba Grills took 6th place and We Want Que took 7th. Eighth place went to Smoke Shack and 9th went to Southern Hogs. Fiddler’s BBQ rounded out the top 10.

Lang BBQ Smokers Tops Tough Field at Fire Ant Festival BBQ Bash

Virtually all of the top teams in the Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) along with several heavy hitters from Florida made their way to Ashburn, GA for the 2016 edition of the Fire Ant Festival BBQ Bash. The 35 teams had to contend with off and on rain throughout the weekend. Still, the judges had to work really hard as the ‘Que was outstanding. It was the finals round judges, however, who had the toughest (& best) job of the day; judging the top three entries in each category.

The Fire Ant Festival has become known for having among the biggest trophies in all of BBQ. The chain saw carved awards for Grand, Reserve and 1st place in each category each topped 100 lbs.

When it came time for the last call of the day, only two teams were still in the hunt for the Grand Championship. Thomas Henry of Budmeisters BBQ had won both the Loin & Pulled Pork categories. Lang BBQ Smokers, led by Darryl Strickland, was the top team in Ribs. The final tally gave the edge to Ribs and Lang BBQ Smokers took home the Grand Championship trophy & a $2500 check.

Bull Rush BBQ, Pitmaster Bryan Mroczka, took 4th place in both Loin & Ribs plus 8th in Pulled Pork to accumulate the highest cumulative score in the preliminary rounds and the Reserve Grand Championship.

1st Loin – Budmiestes BBQ

Budmeisters topped the field in Loin. Ashburn’s own Raymond Poore of REAL-Licious Q took 2nd with CaJenn Smokin Que coming in 3rd place. CaJenn, led by Billy Jennings, had a perfect 600 score in the Loin preliminaries. Bull Rush BBQ grabbed 4th place followed by Real South BBQ in 6th and Hard Rock Hill BBQ in 7th place. Eighth place went to Killer Swine BBQ in a tiebreaker over Smokin 42 BBQ Tenth place went to Rescue Smokers.

1st Pulled Pork – Budmeisters BBQ

In Pulled Pork, it was once again Budmeisters BBQ getting to 1st place call. Barbecue Crew was runner up with Fixin 2 Pork Q in 3rd place. Real South BBQ earned the 4th place award. Smokin 42 BBQ grabbed 5th place; Raging Smoke BBQ grabbed 6th and Bubba Grills took 7th place. Bull Rush BBQ walked in 8th place. Dixie Que edged Double D Cooking team by 0.3 of a point for 9th place.

Lang BBQ Smokers Grand Champion Ribs topped the category with Bubba Grills taking 2nd place and Rescue Smokers taking 3rd. Bull Rush BBQ got their second call for 4th place. Just Blowing Smoke won the tiebreaker over Hootie Q for 5th place. Fixin 2 Pork Q walked in 7th place. REAL-Licious Q edged Southern Tailgates for 8th place by .03 of a point. Barbecue Crew rounded out the top 10.

Brisket Challenge – Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team

The contest held a special Brisket Challenge with 22 of the teams in the field participating. Jack Fallin and Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team notched a perfect 600 score to win the Brisket Challenge. They had to be perfect to win, because Lang BBQ Smokers took 2nd place with a score of 599.7. Bull Rush BBQ added to their big day with a 3rd place finish. Raging Smoke BBQ took 4th place and Poverty Hill Smokers came in 5th place.

The GBA was very proud to be back at the Fire Ant Festival & thanks all the fantastic volunteers who worked extremely hard to keep everything flowing smoothly. The GBA looks forward to being back in Ashburn in 2017.

Swineholio Takes Grand at Walton Co. BBQ Festival

A tough field of 30 pitmasters turned out for the 2nd Walton Co. BBQ Festival. The scores show that the Que was off the chain & the competition for the final call was close. It went right down to the wire, but Swineholio, led by John Goff, got the coveted last walk of the day. Swineholio’s 596.7 score in the Ribs finals was just a half point better the 596.2 final round scores recorded by Smoking the Good Stuff in Loin and Bubba Grills in Pulled Pork.

Grand Champion – Swineholio

Robby Royal & Rescue Smokers made if back to back Reserve Championship awards by finaling in both Loin & Pulled Pork along with 12th place in Ribs.

The Loin category was unbelievable as BCD, Rescue Smokers & Smoking the Good Stuff all advanced to the final round with perfect 600 scores in the preliminary round. In the final round, Smoking the Good Stuff won with Rescue Smokers coming in second & BCD taking third. Just Blowing Smoke & Old Henry’s BBQ were just one tick off a perfection with scores of 599.7. Just Blowing Smoke won the tiebreaker to claim 4th place. Hootie Q finished 5th; Real South BBQ finished 6th and Swineholio finished 8th. Ninth place went to Forget Me Knot BBQ and 1oth place went to The Porkinator.

Following Bubba Grills in Pulled Pork was Real South BBQ as runner up & Rescue Smokers in 3rd place. Hootie Q claimed 4th place with Shark Bite BBQ claiming 5th place. Just 0.4 of a point separated 6th, 7th & 8th places. Smoking the Good Stuff edged out 92 BBQ and CaJenn Smokin’ Que respectively. Smokin’ 42 BBQ & Johnson Boys BBQ rounded out the top 10.

Swineholio’s Grand Championship Ribs topped the field with The Porkinator in 2nd & Southern Hogs in 3rd place. 92 BBQ edged out 4K BBQ & Just Blowing Smoke for 4th place. Seventh place went to Real South BBQ. In eight place was CaJenn Smokin’ Que. Forget Me Know BBQ walked in 9th place and Porkaholic’s Barbecue finished in 10th.

The Georgia Barbecue Association was pleased once again to be a part of the great event in Walton Co and look forward to returning again next year. Next up for the GBA is the Fire Ant Festival in Ashburn.

Just Blowing Smoke Takes the Title at Brookhaven BBQ Bash

The Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) invaded the metro Atlanta area for the Brookhaven BBQ Bash as part of the Brookhaven Soccerfest on the Fourth of July weekend. The weekend started with on again/off again showers throughout the day Friday. By Saturday morning, it had turned into a steady rain. The weather radar did give much hope with a continuous band of rain all the way west to Mississippi. While lightning strikes delayed the start of the Peachtree Road Race just a few miles to the south, the dedicated GBA Pitmasters continued to work their magic & turned in box after box of outstanding ‘Que.

Grand Champion – Just Blowing Smoke

Just Blowing Smoke, Robin & Amy Bowles along with Rick Goldstein, made finals in all three GBA categories, but it was their first place Pork Loin that tallied the highest score of the day from the panel of finals judges to capture the Grand Championship. Brad Sweet of 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers took home the Reserve Grand Championship when he made finals in Pulled Pork and Ribs but just missed a “triple final” by 0.6 of a point for a 4th place finish in Loin.

Between Just Blowing Smoke’s winning Loin entry & 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers 4th place box was Hard Rock Hill BBQ in 2nd place and Buckhaven BBQ, in their first competition, in 3rd place. Fifth place went to 29 Barbecue with Hootie Q taking 6th place. Rub Shakers Que took 7th place & 8th went to Simply Q. Big Mama’s & Big Daddy’s BBQ grabbed the 9th spot and Lil Bubba’s rounded out the top 10.

Harvey & Shirley Wills of Fiddler’s BBQ took top honors in Pulled Pork. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers was the runner-up and Just Blowing Smoke took 3rd place. In the preliminary round, Just Blowing Smoke tallied a perfect score of 600. Simply Q finished in 4th place. Fifth place went to Lil Bubba’s by 0.1 of a point over Hard Rock Hill BBQ. Swineholio came in 7th place followed by Porch Light in 8th; Que the Musick in 9th and Rub Shakers Que in 10th place.

The third category of the day is always Ribs and 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers topped the field. Just Blowing Smoke came in second and Swineholio finished in 3rd place. 29 Barbeque took 4th place. Simply Q edged out Fiddler’s BBQ for 5th place by 0.1 of a point. Seveth & eighth places were also close as Rub Shakers Que edged out Hard Rock Hill BBQ by just 0.2 of a point. Ninth & 10 places went to Que the Musick and Porch Light respectively.

The GBA really enjoyed the beautiful park in Brookhaven. It was a shame that the weather washed out most the Soccerfest activities. Our hosts for the weekend did an outstanding job & the GBA is looking forward to a return visit in the near future.

With the 2014-2015 competition season officially closed, we now look ahead to our Annual Banquet. It will be held on August 1st at Healy Point Country Club in Macon. All GBA members – cook teams, judges, sponsors, and general members – are invited to be a part of this special event. We will honor our Teams of the Year as well as our Judge of the Year. There be will nice gift bags from our sponsors as well as drawings for great door prizes. The GBA also has a Judge Training Class scheduled for August 22 at Towns Bluff Park near Hazlehurst. We are excited to kick off our 2015-2016 competition season in Griffin on Sept 25-26. This will be one of three Team of the Year double points contests. Bubba Grills Takes Grand at Smokin’ Pork N Butts

There are a couple of things you can count on at Smokin’ Pork N Butts in Jackson. Great BBQ and Rain. Mud boots were almost as essential as grills, charcoal & wood as steady rain pelted the event for most of the weekend. In spite of the challenging conditions, the teams still made the judges work hard to determine who had the best BBQ of the day.

Fiddlers BBQ made finals in all three categories. Southern Hogs finaled in Loin & Pulled Pork. However, it was Bubba Grills Rib entry that recorded the top score in the final rounds to claim the Grand Championship.

Harvery & Shirley Wills of Fiddlers BBQ, with an assist from Master Judge candidate Greg Sebastian, “Triple Finaled” and accumulated the most points in the preliminary rounds to win the Reserve Champion award.

Pork Loin is always a difficult category, but the scorers had to go to the tiebreaker to determine the winner in the category. Both Fiddler’s BBQ and LawDawg BBQ scored 594.4 in the final round of Loin judging. The GBA declares “Its All About the Taste” and the Taste scores are the first level in the tiebreaker. Fiddler’s BBQ had the highest taste score & edged LawDawg for first place. LawDawg BBQ had a perfect 600 score in the preliminary Loin round. Southern Hogs grabbed third place. Que the Musick took 4th place with Just Blowing Smoke taking fifth. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers took 6th place by winning the tiebreaker over Smokin J’s BBQ. Eighth place went to Bubba Grills; 9th place went to Smoke Shack BBQ and 10th went to Main Street BBQ.

Southern Hogs

In Pulled Pork, it was Fiddlers BBQ once again taking top honors. Southern Hogs finished as runner-up with Que the Musick in third place. Main Street BBQ got the 4th place call and Fletcher’s Finest got 5th place. Smokin the Good Stuff edged Real South BBQ for 6th place on the tiebreaker. Just Blowing Smoke also edged LawDawg BBQ in the tiebreaker for 8th place. Bubba Grills rounded out the top 10.

The Grand Championship winning Rib entry earned first place for Bubba Grills. Fiddlers BBQ completed their strong cook with the 2nd place award. Smokin the Good Stuff took 3rd place, but also had a perfect 600 score in the preliminary round. BCD (Boys Cooking Dangerously) came in 4th place. Hootie Q edged 29 BBQ by 0.1 of a point to take 5th place. Just Blowing Smoke captured 7th place and Smoke Shack BBQ captured 8th place. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers & Rub Shakers Que finished 9th & 10th respectively.

Once again Connie & Wayne Rosser of the Butt County Exchange Club did an outstanding job managing the contest in trying conditions. The GBA heads to the Three Rivers Festival and Towns Bluff Park on the Altamaha River in Hazlehurst on May 1-2. The following week it will be Smoke on the Water on beautiful Lake Acworth. The month of May completes the water based trifecta with the 1st Annual White Oak Pastures BBQ Challenge on Lake Walter F George in Fort Gaines on May 22-23.
