Rescue Smokers Race to Win at Hawkinsville Smokin’ the Track

The heavy rains & muddy conditions forced a shutdown of the harness racing at Hawkinsville Smokin’ the Track. Most of the Georgia Barbecue Association’s (GBA) teams, however, were tucked in out of the weather under the shelter of the horse arena. It came down to a photo finish as just two tenths of a point separated the top two entries of the day. Robby Royal & Rescue Smoker won the Grand Championship when his final round Rib entry scored a 599 out of a possible 600 to slip past Brad Sweet & 92 BBQ’s score of 598.8 in Pulled Pork.

Grand Champion – Rescue Smokers

92 BBQ made finals in both Loin & Pulled Pork and added a 6th place in Ribs to take the Reserve Grand Championship.

Reserve Grand Champion – 92 BBQ

Rescue Smokers topped the Loin category. Forget Me Not BBQ & 92 BBQ tallied identical 593.3 scores in finals to tie for 2nd place. Forget Me Know won on the first tiebreaker – taste – to claim the runner-up spot. Fourth place went to We Want Que with Real South BBQ taking 5th place. Southern Hogs camin 6th, Rub Shakers Que came in 7th & Johnson Boys BBQ came in 8th place. In 9th place was Holy Smokes and in 10th place was Kelvin’s BBQ.

Ragin’ Smoke BBQ

92 BBQ had the best Pulled Pork entry of the day. Bubba Grills took 2nd place. Ragin’ Smoke BBQ made finals for the first time in the GBA & finished in 3rd place. Smokin’ AJ’s was back after a long layoff & took 4th place. Holy Smokes came in 5th with Real South BBQ just 0.3 back in 6th and another 0.3 back was Southern Hogs in 7th place. Kelvin’s BBQ, Just Blowing Smoke & Johnson Boys BBQ finished 8th thru 10th respectively.

The Grand Championship Ribs of Rescue Smokers took first place honors. Smokin’ AJ’s came in 2dn with Southern Hogs in 3rd place. The 4th place call went to H&J Cooking Team. Kelvin’s BBQ walked for the third time of the day, this time for 5th place. 92 BBQ completed their strong cook with the 6th place call. Ragin’ Smoke BBQ took 7th place; Holy Smokes took 8th & Old Henry’s BBQ claimed 9th place. Just Blowing Smoke rounded out the top 10.

The GBA congratulates Smokin’ the Track contest committee for going above & beyond in harsh conditions and delivered a well run contest. The GBA next heads to Jackson for Smoking Pork “N” Butts on April 15-16.

Real South BBQ’s Perfect Ribs Take Grand at Jekyll Island BBQ Beach Bash

The Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) convened on the coast after a couple months down time for the Jekyll Island BBQ Beach Bash. The event, sponsored by the Brunswick Lions Club, is always a favorite of both the GBA cook teams & judges. This year, the weather gods tried their best to put a damper on the event with cold temps, high winds & off and on rain. Twenty seven hardy GBA pitmasters and 12 Cooking for Fun pitmasters adapted and overcame the elements to turn in outstanding ‘Que. In fact, not one but two entries in the contest gained a perfect 600 score from the judges. The contest was also very balanced no single team gained more than one finals round call. Nine different teams qualified for the finals round across the three categories.

Grand Champion – Real South BBQ

Tim Coleman & the Real South BBQ team from Swainsboro tallied one of the perfect 600 scores with their rib entry in the finals round to earn the Grand Championship for the contest. This was the first Grand Championship for Real South BBQ.

Reserve Grand Champion – Southern Hogs.

Southern Hogs, led by Matt Sapp, made finals in ribs and finished 6th in pulled pork and 9th in loin to take home the Reserve Grand Championship. This was also Southern Hogs first Reserve Championship award.

First Place Loin – Old Henry’s BBQ

Clay and Stephanie Beal of Old Henry’s BBQ got the day of “firsts” rolling by claiming thier first category win in loin. Their 599 score in loin finals was just one point away from a perfect score. 92 BBQ, the 2014-2015 GBA Team of the Year, finished second with Smokin’ 42 BBQ coming in third place. Rescue Smokers claimed 4th place by just 0.2 of a point over CJ’s BBQ. 2 Smokin’ Pfat Boyz took 6th place. There was a 3 way tie for 7th place. Doc & Dicie’s BBQ won the tiebreaker. Forget Me Not BBQ was next in the tiebreaker to take 8th place and Southern Hogs took 9th. Lang’s BBQ Cookers rounded out the top 10.

First Place Pork – Rescue Smokers

Robby Royal & Rescue Smokers also came just a single point shy of a perfect score in pulled pork finals. Their 599 score topped the category. Just Pig Out BBQ was the runner up. Daddy O’s BBQ, Brian Bond pitmaster, recorded a perfect 600 score in the preliminary round and finals entry score gave them 3rd place. Barbecue Crew finished 4th, Holy Smokes finished 5th and Southern Hogs finished 6th. Seventh place went to Captain Jack’s & Peachtree while Mojo Smokehouse came in 8th place. CJ’s BBQ won the tie for 9th place over Raging Smoke BBQ.

Real South BBQ’s Grand Championship winning ribs topped the category. Southern Hogs took 2nd place with Forget Me Not BBQ taking 3rd. Holy Smokes BBQ walked in 4th place. The scorers had to go to the tiebreaker once again to determine 5th place. Smokin’ 42 BBQ edged out Captain Jack’s & Peachtree. Seventh place went to Barbecue Crew with 8th place going to Lang BBQ Cookers. Rescue Smokers and Bubba Grills finished 9th & 1oth respectively.

In the Cooking For Fun division, Wilbur’s Smoke Pig BBQ won the pulled pork category. Under Construction BBQ was the runner-up with Odd Brother’s BBQ in 3rd place. The top spot in ribs went to Okeefonokee Smokers. Under Construction BBQ again was the runner-up again and Aloha Soul claimed 3rd.

Holy Smokes Has The Wiggle & Twist To Win Johnson Co.

The first Johnson Co. Wiggle & Twist Festival included a Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) competition. The unique festival name pays tribute to the old Wrightsville & Tennille Railroad. The old rail route had such a winding path that it picked up the nickname “Wiggle & Twist”. The festival and contest were held at the Wrightsville American Legion Post along with the Johnson Co. Chamber of Commerce. A large crowd turned to enjoy the sights & sounds of the BBQ competition; lots of vendors & great music. Holy Smokes, Gary & Dion Lanton, from nearby Dublin won both the Pulled Pork & Rib categories to claim the Grand Championship.

Grand Champion – Holy Smokes

Tifton’s Smokin’ 42 BBQ had a 599.7 preliminary score in Loin along with a 6th place in Pulled Pork and 7th place in Ribs to win the Reserve Grand Championship.

1st Loin – Bubba Grills

In the Loin finals, Bubba Grills edged Rescue Smokers by just 0.4 of a point to win the category. Smokin’ 42 BBQ finished third. The competition was close throughout the field as there was a 3 way tie for 4th place between Fiddlers BBQ, CaJenn Smokin Q and H & J Cooking Team. Fiddlers BBQ won the tiebreaker to take 4th place. CaJenn then won the next tiebreaker for 5th and H & J took 6th place. Georgia Boys claimed 7th place just ahead of Johnson Boys BBQ in 8th. Ninth place went to Real South BBQ and Holy Smokes got the 10th place call.

The Pulled Pork finals was almost as close as the Loin finals. Holy Smokes won the category by only 0.8 of a point over Real South BBQ. Old Henry’s BBQ may have gotten the loudest ovation of the day with their 3rd place call. The BBQ Ninja took 4th place; Georgia Boys took 5th and Smokin’ 42 BBQ took 6th place. Southern Hogs edged Bubba Grills for 7th place by 0.3 of a point. CaJenn Smokin’ Q and H & J Cooking Team finished 9th & 10th respectively.

Holy Smokes Grand Championship winning Ribs topped the category. Fiddler’s BBQ was the runner up. Fat Daddy P’s BBQ, in the first competition, got the 3rd place call. Rescue Smokers grabbed 4th place with The BBQ Ninja in 5th. Sixth place went to H & J Cooking Team with 7th place going to Smokin’ 42 BBQ. Real South BBQ took 8th place. Johnson Boys BBQ walked in 9th place and Bubba Grills rounded out the top 10.

In the Cooking for Fun Division, Mama’s Que & Stew won the Pulled Pork category with Big Papa BBQ in 2nd & Smokin’ Snowballs in 3rd. In Cooking for Fun Ribs, Big Papa BBQ walked last. Master Basters took 2nd and Smokin’s Snowballs, again, took 3rd place.

Wiggle & Twist for their outstanding hospitality including a delicious Friday evening welcome dinner for all the teams & GBA officials. Smokin’ 42 BBQ Defends Home Turf Again in Tifton

Twenty six Georgia Barbecue Associations teams gathered at Fulwood Park in Tifton, Ga for Rhythm & Ribs. The event in Tifton has become a favorite among the teams with a great venue and a large music and crafts festival to go along with the BBQ competition For the second year in a row, the hometown boys of Smokin’ 42 BBQ took home top honors by wining both the Loin & Pulled Pork categories and the Grand Championship. Chad Brooks and his crew were certainly on top of their game as they also recorded a perfect 600 score in the preliminary round of Pulled Pork. The event in Tifton has become a favorite among the teams with a great venue and a large music and crafts festival to go along with the BBQ competition

Reserve Champion – Just Blowing Smoke

Robin Bowles and Just Blowing Smoke made finals in Pulled Pork and Ribs along with 8th place in Loin to capture the Reserve Grand Champion award.

Chad Brooks and Smokin 42 BBQ’s score of 596.7 was the top score among the three finalists in Loin to take first place. Captain Jack’s Fredom BBQ Team took seond place with 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers taking third place. Fourth place went to Bubba Grills with Dobey Q in fifth place. LawDawg BBQ won the tiebreaker over Stumps Smokers BBQ Team for 6th place. In eighth place was Just Blowing Smoke with H & J Cooking team in 9th and Holy Smokes rounding out the top 10.

Smokin’ 42 BBQ followed up the perfect 600 score in Pulled Pork preliminaries with a near perfect 599.1 score in the finals round to win the category. Stumps Smokers BBQ Team came in 2nd place with Just Blowing Smoke in third. Rub Shakers Que took 4th place by 0.3 of a point over Law Dawg BBQ. Jimmy Hornbuckle and Swine Time Grilling Team turned in the best Rib box of the day. Captain Jacks Freedom BBQ Team was the runner up with Just Blowing Smoke finishing in 3rd place and Bethel Smokers finishing in 4th place. Stumps Smokers BBQ Teams won the tiebreaker to take 5th place over H & J Cooking Team. J Dub Stew & Que grabbed 7th place and . Dobey Q took 8th place. It was Real South BBQ & Holy Smokes coming in 9th & 10 places respectively.

Rythm & Ribs also held a non-sanctioned backyard contest. Kason Gray of Wicked Lickin’ BBQ Team got the Grand Championship call for the second year in a row.

The GBA heads north for the Hitiachi Walton Co BBQ Festival on March 13.14 followed by Durhamtown Spring Jam & BBQ Cookoff on March 20-21.

Just Blowin’ Smoke Wins the Shootout at Doc Holiday Festival

The GBA made its debut at the Doc Holiday Festival in downtown Griffin, GA and it turned into a 3 way shootout for the Grand Championship. In the end, the Loin entry by Robin Bowles & Just Blowin’ Smoke topped the Pulled Pork box by Dixie Que’s Rick Godfrey and the Ribs entry of Gary Lanton of Holy Smokes.

Dixie Que finaled in Pulled Pork, finished 6th in Ribs and 11th in Loin to take the Reserve Championship for the top cumulative score in the three preliminary rounds.

Just Blowin’ Smoke’s championship Loin box topped the category. Two Fat Boys & A Grill came in second with Rolling Smoke Competition Que in third place. Swine Time Grillin’ Team took fourth place. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers edged Bearded BBQ for fifth place on the tiebreaker. Real South BBQ grabbed seventh place and RTC Smokin’ grabbed eighth place. Fiddler’s BBQ in ninth and H & J Cooking Team in tenth rounded out the top 10,

Dixie Que won Pulled Pork with Just Blowin’ Smoke the runner-up. Fiddler’s BBQ came in third with H & J Cooking Team in fourth. Swine Time Grillin’ Team nailed down the fifth spot. Sixth place went to Rub Shakers Que and seventh place went to Old Henry’s BBQ. In eight place was Holy Smokes; in ninth place was Smokin’ J’s and in tenth place was Real South BBQ.

First Place Ribs – Holy Smokes

Holy Smokes had the best box of Ribs on the day. Two Fat Boys & A Grill took second place with 29 Barbecue taking third place. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers edged out Rub Shakers Que for fourth place by 0.3 of a point. Dixie Que finished in the sixth spot. In seventh place was Fiddler’s BBQ with RTC Smokin’ in eighth place. Real South BBQ and Just Blowin’ Smoke tied for ninth place with Real South BBQ coming out on top in the tiebreaker.

The Doc Holiday Festival also held a GBA sanctioned Cooking for Fun contest. The GBA’s Cooking for Fun division competes in two categories: Pulled Pork and Ribs. Simply Q topped Swine Dining in Pulled Pork. Swine Dining returned the favor by topping Simply Q to win the Ribs category.
