LawDawg BBQ Returns to Action & Walks Last

It had been almost a year since Kerry Sparks and LawDawg BBQ last entered a Georgia Barbecue Association competition. Smokin Pork N Butts in Jackson, GA was where the team returned to the pit wars and they proved the long layoff didn’t effect their skills. LawDawg BBQ won the Pork Loin category & edged out Pulled Pork winner Bubba Grills and Rib winner Rescue Smokers the last call and the Grand Championship.

Grand Champion – LawDawg BBQ

Robby Royal continued to dominate the circuit by making finals in both Loin and Ribs along with a 4th place finish in Pulled Pork. The strong overall cook gave the Sycamore, GA team the Reserve Grand Championship.

Reserve Grand Champion – Rescue Smokers

LawDawg BBQ took top honors in Loin with Rescue Smokers as the runner-up. Fletcher’s Finest advanced to finals on the strength of a perfect 600 score in the preliminary round and finished third. In 4th place was We Want Que and in 5th place was Johnson Boys BBQ. Screaming Eagle BBQ took 6th place, BCD took 7th place and Old Henry’s BBQ took 8th place. Quenut BBQ claimed 9th place and Southern Hogs was tenth.

First Place Pulled Pork – Bubba Grills

Bubba Grills topped the Pulled Pork category. Larry Cavendar & Screaming Eagle BBQ, a former Cooking for Fun division team, took 2nd place. Cavendar posted a perfect 600 score in the preliminary round, Hootie Q took 3rd place. Fourth place went to Rescue Smokers with Southern Hogs taking 5th place. Brown Owl BBQ, in their first competition, walked in 6th and Smoke Shack walked in 7th place. LawDawg BBQ, 92 BBQ and We Want Que finished 8th thru 10th respecitively.

In Ribs, three teams tied for 2nd place in the preliminary round. This meant the team losing the tiebreaker would miss the finals, Johnson Boys BBQ came up short on the tiebreaker finshed in 4th place. Rescue Smokers won the category, 92 BBQ came in second and had the third perfect 600 score in the preliminary rounds. Fletcher’s Finest came in third. Real South BBQ got the 5th place call. Bubba Grills took 6th place and We Want Que took 7th. Eighth place went to Smoke Shack and 9th went to Southern Hogs. Fiddler’s BBQ rounded out the top 10.

Barbecue Crew Defends Title in Hometown

The 3rd Annual Moultrie Moose Lodge #1158 BBQ Cook-off is the last event on the 2015 calendar year for the Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA). But before taking a break for the holidays, 11 of the top 20 teams in the GBA Team of the Year standings turned for the competition. The members of the Moose Lodge always roll out the red carpet for the GBA teams & judges. The Friday nite steak dinners that the Lodge serves have everyone looking forward to this contest each year.

Despite all the GBA heavy hitters best efforts, Moultrie’s own Foy Whatley of Barbecue Crew won the Grand Championship for the second year in a row. Whatley made finals in both Pulled Pork & Ribs, but it was his Pulled Pork box that brought home top honors. That Grand Championship box must have been really special as the panel of finals judges commented that all 3 of the Pulled Pork final entries were among the best they had sampled all year.

Brian Bond of Daddy O’s BBQ made finals in both Pulled Pork and Ribs plus added an 8th place finish in Loin to accumulate the highest cumulative score in the preliminary rounds. As a result, Daddy O’s BBQ took home the Reserve Grand Championship.

Just Blowing Smoke won the Loin category with Real South BBQ as the runner-up. Simply Q finished in 3rd place. Fiddler’s BBQ got the call for 4th place with H & J Cooking Team getting called for 5th place. Sixth place went to Southern Hogs; followed by Smokin’ 42 BBQ in 7th place & Daddy O’s BBQ in 8th place. Sunset Smokers, also from Moultrie, grabbed 9th place and Johnson Boys BBQ taking 10th place.

Following Barbecue winning Pulled Pork was Southern Hogs in 2nd place with Daddy O’s BBQ in 3rd place. Real South BBQ got their second call in 4th place and CaJenn Smoking Que walked in 5th place. Rescue Smokers came in 6th place just 0.4 ahead of Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team in 7th place. Eighth place was also close as Raging Smoke edged H & J Cooking Team by just 0.2 of a point. Smokin’ 42 BBQ rounded out the top 10.

Daddy O’s BBQ took top honors in Ribs. Barbecue Crew took 2nd place. In the preliminary round Ribs, Barbecue Crew scored a perfect 600. Smokin’ 42 BBQ. Rescue Smokers came in 4th place just ahead of Just Blowing Smoke in 5th. Sixth place went to Southern Hogs and 7th place went to Rub Shakers Que. Eighth thru 10th places went to Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team, Real South BBQ and H & J Cooking Team respectively.

The contest also featured a backyard competition. Under Construction BBQ took 1st place in Chicken. Wicked Lickin BBQ Crew got the first place calls in both Pulled Pork & Ribs.

The GBA thanks all the Moose Lodge members for their great hospitality and we are looking forward to returning the Moultrie in 2016. Meanwhile, the GBA will pause the 2015-2016 season for the holidays.

The GBA will hold a judge training class on Jan 23, 2016 in Fort Gaines. Fee for the class is $35. You must be a member of the GBA to take the class. Holy Smokes Has The Wiggle & Twist To Win Johnson Co.

The first Johnson Co. Wiggle & Twist Festival included a Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) competition. The unique festival name pays tribute to the old Wrightsville & Tennille Railroad. The old rail route had such a winding path that it picked up the nickname “Wiggle & Twist”. The festival and contest were held at the Wrightsville American Legion Post along with the Johnson Co. Chamber of Commerce. A large crowd turned to enjoy the sights & sounds of the BBQ competition; lots of vendors & great music. Holy Smokes, Gary & Dion Lanton, from nearby Dublin won both the Pulled Pork & Rib categories to claim the Grand Championship.

Tifton’s Smokin’ 42 BBQ had a 599.7 preliminary score in Loin along with a 6th place in Pulled Pork and 7th place in Ribs to win the Reserve Grand Championship.

1st Loin – Bubba Grills

In the Loin finals, Bubba Grills edged Rescue Smokers by just 0.4 of a point to win the category. Smokin’ 42 BBQ finished third. The competition was close throughout the field as there was a 3 way tie for 4th place between Fiddlers BBQ, CaJenn Smokin Q and H & J Cooking Team. Fiddlers BBQ won the tiebreaker to take 4th place. CaJenn then won the next tiebreaker for 5th and H & J took 6th place. Georgia Boys claimed 7th place just ahead of Johnson Boys BBQ in 8th. Ninth place went to Real South BBQ and Holy Smokes got the 10th place call.

The Pulled Pork finals was almost as close as the Loin finals. Holy Smokes won the category by only 0.8 of a point over Real South BBQ. Old Henry’s BBQ may have gotten the loudest ovation of the day with their 3rd place call. The BBQ Ninja took 4th place; Georgia Boys took 5th and Smokin’ 42 BBQ took 6th place. Southern Hogs edged Bubba Grills for 7th place by 0.3 of a point. CaJenn Smokin’ Q and H & J Cooking Team finished 9th & 10th respectively.

Holy Smokes Grand Championship winning Ribs topped the category. Fiddler’s BBQ was the runner up. Fat Daddy P’s BBQ, in the first competition, got the 3rd place call. Rescue Smokers grabbed 4th place with The BBQ Ninja in 5th. Sixth place went to H & J Cooking Team with 7th place going to Smokin’ 42 BBQ. Real South BBQ took 8th place. Johnson Boys BBQ walked in 9th place and Bubba Grills rounded out the top 10.

In the Cooking for Fun Division, Mama’s Que & Stew won the Pulled Pork category with Big Papa BBQ in 2nd & Smokin’ Snowballs in 3rd. In Cooking for Fun Ribs, Big Papa BBQ walked last. Master Basters took 2nd and Smokin’s Snowballs, again, took 3rd place.

The GBA thanks all the coordinators and volunteers of the Johnson Co. A Near Perfect Day for Rescue Smokers

The 2015-2016 competition season for the Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) got off to a unbelievable start at the Doc Holiday BBQ & Blues Festival in downtown Griffin. On the Pro competiton, 39 of the top teams in the state turned out to try and grab the early lead in the Team of the Year competition as Double Points were on the line. There were also 5 Cooking for Fun division teams. The contest also featured Friday ancillaries in Sauce, Wings & Dessert. There was also a special Saturday Brisket Shootout competition.

The level of competition was on display right off the bat in Pork Loin as three teams — Bubba Grills, Dixie Q & Rescue Smokers — each tallied a perfect 600 score in the preliminary round. Smokin’ 42 BBQ missed the 4th perfect score in Loin by just 0.3 of a point. Rescue Smokers pulled their second 600 score of the day in the Pulled Pork preliminary round.

Robby Royal of Rescue Smokers near perfect day ended with the last call as Grand Champion of the contest. Lonnie Smith and the Bubba Grills team strong showing across all three categories earned the Reserve Grand Champion award.

First Place Loin – Dixie Q

Breaking ties with perfect scores often comes down to the dreaded coin toss. In the GBA, however, the top three teams in each category advance to the Finals rounds where they prepare another turn in box to be scored by a select panel of Finals judges. So, the three teams with perfect scores go to settle it with a head to head to head matchup.

Rick Godfrey of Dixie Q got the top score in the Loin finals round to win the category. Rescue Smokers took second place with Bubba Grills taking third. Smokin’ 42 BBQ came in 4th place. Johnson Boys BBQ, in their first GBA contest, finished 5th with Dobey Q finishing sixth. Forget Me Not BBQ took 7th place, Daddy-O’s BBQ took 8th, 92 BBQ took 9th and Fiddlers BBQ took 10th place.

Rescue Smokers had the top finals round Pulled Pork score for the win. Johnson Boys BBQ was the runner-up with Southern Hogs in 3rd place. Bubba Grills grabbed 4th place followed by CaJenn BBQ in 5th and Rub My Butt in 6th place. Seventh place went to We Want Que and 8th place went to Dixie Q. Smokin 42 BBQ & The BBQ Ninja finished 9th & 10th respectively.

The BBQ Ninja took top honors in Ribs. 92 BBQ took second place with Smokin the Good Stuff in third. For third place, Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team edged out Fiddlers BBQ who came in fourth. Sixth place went to We Want Que just ahead of Rescue Smokers in 7th place. Rub My Butt, Simply Q and Daddy-O’s BBQ rounded out the top 10.

Rescue Smokers continued their domination of the day by winning the Brisket Challenge. Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team took 2nd place with Smokin 42 BBQ taking 3rd. The BBQ Ninja grabbed 4th place and Dobey Q took 5th.

In the Cooking For Fun Division, Badonkadonk won Pulled Pork with Mama’s Que & Stew in 2nd and Burnt Offering Cooking Crew in third. In Ribs, Burnt Bermuda BBQ took top honors with Badonkadonk as runner-up and Mama’s Que & Stew taking third.

Next, the GBA heads to Milledgeville for the Deep Roots Festival and The GBA State Championship on October 23-24.

Just Blowing Smoke Takes the Title at Brookhaven BBQ Bash

The Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) invaded the metro Atlanta area for the Brookhaven BBQ Bash as part of the Brookhaven Soccerfest on the Fourth of July weekend. The weekend started with on again/off again showers throughout the day Friday. By Saturday morning, it had turned into a steady rain. The weather radar did give much hope with a continuous band of rain all the way west to Mississippi. While lightning strikes delayed the start of the Peachtree Road Race just a few miles to the south, the dedicated GBA Pitmasters continued to work their magic & turned in box after box of outstanding ‘Que.

Grand Champion – Just Blowing Smoke

Just Blowing Smoke, Robin & Amy Bowles along with Rick Goldstein, made finals in all three GBA categories, but it was their first place Pork Loin that tallied the highest score of the day from the panel of finals judges to capture the Grand Championship. Brad Sweet of 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers took home the Reserve Grand Championship when he made finals in Pulled Pork and Ribs but just missed a “triple final” by 0.6 of a point for a 4th place finish in Loin.

Between Just Blowing Smoke’s winning Loin entry & 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers 4th place box was Hard Rock Hill BBQ in 2nd place and Buckhaven BBQ, in their first competition, in 3rd place. Fifth place went to 29 Barbecue with Hootie Q taking 6th place. Rub Shakers Que took 7th place & 8th went to Simply Q. Big Mama’s & Big Daddy’s BBQ grabbed the 9th spot and Lil Bubba’s rounded out the top 10.

Harvey & Shirley Wills of Fiddler’s BBQ took top honors in Pulled Pork. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers was the runner-up and Just Blowing Smoke took 3rd place. In the preliminary round, Just Blowing Smoke tallied a perfect score of 600. Simply Q finished in 4th place. Fifth place went to Lil Bubba’s by 0.1 of a point over Hard Rock Hill BBQ. Swineholio came in 7th place followed by Porch Light in 8th; Que the Musick in 9th and Rub Shakers Que in 10th place.

The third category of the day is always Ribs and 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers topped the field. Just Blowing Smoke came in second and Swineholio finished in 3rd place. 29 Barbeque took 4th place. Simply Q edged out Fiddler’s BBQ for 5th place by 0.1 of a point. Seveth & eighth places were also close as Rub Shakers Que edged out Hard Rock Hill BBQ by just 0.2 of a point. Ninth & 10 places went to Que the Musick and Porch Light respectively.

The GBA really enjoyed the beautiful park in Brookhaven. It was a shame that the weather washed out most the Soccerfest activities. Our hosts for the weekend did an outstanding job & the GBA is looking forward to a return visit in the near future.

With the 2014-2015 competition season officially closed, we now look ahead to our Annual Banquet. It will be held on August 1st at Healy Point Country Club in Macon. All GBA members – cook teams, judges, sponsors, and general members – are invited to be a part of this special event. We will honor our Teams of the Year as well as our Judge of the Year. There be will nice gift bags from our sponsors as well as drawings for great door prizes. The GBA also has a Judge Training Class scheduled for August 22 at Towns Bluff Park near Hazlehurst. We are excited to kick off our 2015-2016 competition season in Griffin on Sept 25-26. This will be one of three Team of the Year double points contests. The GBA State Championship will be held at the Deep Roots BBQ Festival in Milledgeville on Oct 23-24. Make you plans now to be a part of these two great events.
