South Cobb BBQ & Blues Gets Smoked Rescue Style

Robby Royal and Rescue Smokers,of BBQ Pitmasters fame, took first place in both Pulled Pork and Ribs at the South Cobb BBQ & Blues Festival. It was his near perfect score of 599.1 in the Pulled Pork finals round that netted the team the Grand Championship

Just Blowing Smoke, Robin Bowles PItmaster, made finals in Loin; finished 5th in Pulled Pork and 7th in Ribs to take home the Reserve Championship.

The first category of the contest was Loin and Just Blowing Smoke topped the field. Butt Rubbin BBQ took second place and 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers took third. Rescue Smokers actually tied for third place but lost the tiebreaker to miss finals and finished in fourth place. Hard Rock Hill BBQ came in fifth place with Dixie Que in sixth. Smokin Butts BBQ took seventh; Rub Shakers Que took eighth; Fiddlers BBQ took ninth and We Want Que took 10th place.

Rescue Smokers won the Pulled Pork category with CJ’s as runner-up. We Want Que grabbed third place with 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers in fourth and Just Blowing Smoke in fifth place. There was a tie for sixth place and Fiddler’s BBQ won the tiebreaker over Dixie Que. Rub Shakers Que, Smokin’ the Good Stuff and Hard Rock Hill BBQ finished eighth through tenth respectively.

It was Rescue Smokers taking their second win of the day with the top scoring Rib box. Rub Shakers Que came in second with Smokin’ The Good Stuff coming in third. Fiddlers BBQ took fourth; Smoking J’s took fifth place and Dixie Que took sixth place. Seventh place went to Just Blowing Smoke. The final three calls in Ribs were very close. Butt Rubbin’ BBQ got the eighth place call by just 0.2 of a point over We Want Que in ninth. Just 0.1 of a point back was Daddy-O’s BBQ in tenth place.

The Georgia Barbecue Association really enjoyed their first trip to Austell and the South Cobb BBQ & Blues Festival We want to thank the contest organizers and the staff of the beautiful EpiCenter for hosting a great contest. Next week, the GBA heads to MIlledgeville for the Deep Roots Fesitval

Just Blowin’ Smoke Wins the Shootout at Doc Holiday Festival

The GBA made its debut at the Doc Holiday Festival in downtown Griffin, GA and it turned into a 3 way shootout for the Grand Championship. In the end, the Loin entry by Robin Bowles & Just Blowin’ Smoke topped the Pulled Pork box by Dixie Que’s Rick Godfrey and the Ribs entry of Gary Lanton of Holy Smokes.

Dixie Que finaled in Pulled Pork, finished 6th in Ribs and 11th in Loin to take the Reserve Championship for the top cumulative score in the three preliminary rounds.

Just Blowin’ Smoke’s championship Loin box topped the category. Two Fat Boys & A Grill came in second with Rolling Smoke Competition Que in third place. Swine Time Grillin’ Team took fourth place. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers edged Bearded BBQ for fifth place on the tiebreaker. Real South BBQ grabbed seventh place and RTC Smokin’ grabbed eighth place. Fiddler’s BBQ in ninth and H & J Cooking Team in tenth rounded out the top 10,

Dixie Que won Pulled Pork with Just Blowin’ Smoke the runner-up. Fiddler’s BBQ came in third with H & J Cooking Team in fourth. Swine Time Grillin’ Team nailed down the fifth spot. Sixth place went to Rub Shakers Que and seventh place went to Old Henry’s BBQ. In eight place was Holy Smokes; in ninth place was Smokin’ J’s and in tenth place was Real South BBQ.

First Place Ribs – Holy Smokes

Holy Smokes had the best box of Ribs on the day. Two Fat Boys & A Grill took second place with 29 Barbecue taking third place. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers edged out Rub Shakers Que for fourth place by 0.3 of a point. Dixie Que finished in the sixth spot. In seventh place was Fiddler’s BBQ with RTC Smokin’ in eighth place. Real South BBQ and Just Blowin’ Smoke tied for ninth place with Real South BBQ coming out on top in the tiebreaker.

The Doc Holiday Festival also held a GBA sanctioned Cooking for Fun contest. The GBA’s Cooking for Fun division competes in two categories: Pulled Pork and Ribs. Simply Q topped Swine Dining in Pulled Pork. Swine Dining returned the favor by topping Simply Q to win the Ribs category.

Smokin’ 42 BBQ Takes Grand at Smokin’ Pork N Butts

It was cold and wet weekend in Jackson & Butts County, GA, but even the weather could not douse the hot streak that Smokin’ 42 BBQ has been on. The team in black from Tifton, GA, captured their 4th Grand Championship of the 2013-204 GBA season. Once again, it was Pork Loin that gave Pitmaster Chad Brooks and teammates Chris O’Neal and Justin Marchant the last call of the day.

Reserve Champion – Fletcher’s Finest

The rain was almost constant during the day Friday and continued throughout the night and most of the day Saturday. Temperatures dropped into the bone chilling range, but the tough conditions for the weekend didn’t dampen the spirits of the contestants. The cook teams took it all in stride and produced some outstanding BBQ for the judges.

Scott Fletcher of Fletcher’s Finest, made finals in Ribs to go along with a 4th place finish in Pullled Pork and a 5th place finish in Loin to take the Reserve Grand Champion award.

Loin Finalist – Where There’s Smoke

Smokin’ 42 BBQ championship winning box topped the Pork Loin field. Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack was the runner-up. Cooking in their first GBA contest, Daniel Waters of Where There’s Smoke made finals & finished third. 92 BBQ came in 4th with Fletcher’s Finest taking 5th place. Another first time GBA competitor, Squeal Team Six/K&K Grills took 6th place. Seventh place went to a hometown team, Just Smoke N Around. Butt Rubbin’ BBQ claimed 8th place with BCD: Boys Cooking Dangerously and Dixie Que rounding out the top 10.

1 Place Pulled Pork – Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack

Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack continued their strong run through the GBA contest season by winning the Pulled Pork category. Brad Sweet and 92 BBQ took 2nd place with Rub Shakers Que taking third. Fourth place went to Fletcher’s Finest and 5th place went to Dixie Que. Bubba Grills got the call for 6th place with BCD: Boys Cooking Dangerously getting the 7th place call. Butt Rubbin’ BBQ, Squeal Team Six/K&K Grills and Smokin’ 42 BBQ finished 8th, 9th & 10th respectively.

Fletcher’s Finest turned in the best Rib box of the day. Bill Goddard & Rub Shakers Que made finals twice & took 2nd place. TC’s BBQ captured 3rd place. Dixie Que & Where There’s Smoke tied for 4th with Dixie Que winning the spot on the 4th tiebreaker. Another local team, Rufus Smokehouse came in 6th place. Seventh thru 10th place went to BubbaGrills, Smokin’ 42 BBQ, 92 BBQ and Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack.

The GBA extends gratitude to Connie & Wayne Rosser and the Jackson Exchange Club for a job very well done in the face of very trying conditions. The next stop on the GBA contest trail is the 3 Rivers BBQ Fest at Towns Bluff Park & Heritage Center in Hazlehurst on May 2-3. The following week the GBA heads north to Acworth for Smoke on the Lake. An new contest has just been added to the GBA Calendar. The Paulding Co. Stars & Stripes BBQ Cook-off will be held in Dallas on June 20-21.

Smokin 42 BBQ didn’t have far to travel since the Rhythm & Ribs Festival was held in Fulwood Park right in their hometown of Tifton, Ga. The “Black Train” parlayed the home field advantage into the last call of the day and the Grand Championship. The team won the championship with their Loin entry in the finals round. Pitbuilder & Pitmaster Lonnie Smith of Bubba Grills made finals in both Loin & Ribs along with 4th place in Pork to record the highest cumulative score across the the GBA categories in the preliminary rounds and win the Reserve Grand Championship.

Smokin’ 42 BBQ took first place honors in Loin. Bubba Grills took second place with H & J Cooking Team taking third place. Fouth place went to Rub Shakers Que. Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack rounded out the top five. Sixth thru tenth in the category went Hungry Hog BBQ, Durt Road Smokerz, Smokin J’s, 92 BBQ and Swine Time Grilling Team.

Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack topped the field in Pulled Pork. 92 BBQ claimed the runner up spot. H & J Cooking Team once again took third place. Bubba Grills claimed fourth place with Captain Jack’s BBQ Crew in fifth place. Rub Shakers Que, Munchee’s Smokehouse, Mojo Smokin’, Butts N Brews BBQ & R Kae BBQ finished sixth thru tenth respectively.

First Place Ribs – Dixie Que

Rick Godfrey and Dixie Que scored a perfect 600 in the Ribs preliminary round. They followed up with the top score in the Ribs finals round to take first place in the category. Bethel Smokers finished second with Bubba Grills taking third place. Smokin J’s and Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack tied for fourth place. It went to the fourth tiebreaker before Smokin J’s claimed the spot. Sixth thru tenth places were 92 BBQ, Captain Jack’s BBQ Crew, Swine Time Grilling Team, Rib Ranch and Smokin’ 42 BBQ.

Fun Cook Grand Champion – Wicked Lickin BBQ

In the non-sanctioned Fun Cook, young pitmaster Kason Gray of Wicked Lickin BBQ swept first place honors in all cattegories & captured the Grand Championship. Kason is the son of Amy & Lamar Weeks and grandson of Jimmy nd Pam Nelms.

The Georgia Barbecue Association expresses gratitude to the City of Tifton and the Tifton-Tift County Tourism Association for their hospitality and coordinating a great contest and event.

Bethel Smokers Takes Grand at Jekyll Island BBQ Beach Bash

Grand Champion – Bethel Smokers

The Georgia Barbecue Association traveled to Jekyll Island, GA for the first contest of 2014. The Brunswick Lions Club hosted the event & the Golden Isles turned out in record numberst. At one point Saturday, traffic was backed up for miles on the causeway leading to the beach front contest & festival site.

Mr Joe Wright, Pitmaster of Bethel Smokers, made finals in both Pork & Ribs, but it was his final round Pork entry that scored a 599 out of a possible 600 points that got the last call of the day. Inside sources tell us that the secret to the team’s success is all in the shoes.

Reserve Grand Champions – Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack

Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack came to Jekyll Island short handed, but Clint & Mandy Britton were up to the challenge. The husband & wife team made finals in Loin along with fifty place finishes in both Pork & Ribs to capture the Reserve Grand Championship.

First Place Loin – 29 Barbecue

In Pork Loin, 29 Barbecue, cooking in their first GBA contest, grabbed first place honors. Legal Smoke took second place with Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack in third. Smoke Risin’ BBQ Joint came in fourth with Fiddler’s BBQ in fifth place.

Bethel Smokers topped the field in the Pulled Pork category. Dixie Que was the runner up. Old Henry’s BBQ made finals for the first time in a GBA contest & took home third place. There was a tie for fourth place between 29 Barbecue and Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack. It went to the 4th level before 29 Barbecue won the tiebreaker.

Smoke Risin’ BBQ Joint from Blackshear had the best Ribs entry of the day. Legal Smoke BBQ took second place. Bethel Smokers captured third with Fiddler’s BBQ taking fourth place. Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack finished in fifth place just a half point ahead of Naked Dave’s BBQ.

The Georgia Barbecue Association would like to congratulate the Brunswick Lions club on a very successful contest and are looking forward to returning to the islands next year. The GBA heads to Tifton, GA for the first time for Rhythm & Ribs Festival on Feb 28 – March 1.
