92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers Wins GBA State Championship

Brad Sweet, Pitmaster of 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers,really brought his A game to Fort Valley for the ComSouth Hambone Jam and the Georgia Barbecue State Championship.  Brad made finals in all three categories and claimed wins in both Loin and Pulled Pork.  The dominating performance earned 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers their first Grand Championship and the title of GBA State Champion for 2014-2015.

DSCF3032Lawdawg BBQ, Kerry & Kevin Sparks,  made finals in Loin and Pulled Pork then tied for 3rd place in Ribs. They missed a triple finals on the 5th tiebreaker to finish in fourth place in the category. The strong performance over the three categories carried the Brunswick team to the Reserve Championship

92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers turned in the state championship Pork Loin. Lawdawg BBQ took second place with The BBQ Ninja, Pitmaster Rodney Ellington, claimed third place. Cooking with Stump took 4th place and Anarque took 5th place.  Smokin’ 42 BBQ and Hard Rock Hill BBQ tied for 6th place with Smokin’42 taking the spot on the 5th tiebreaker. Smokin’ AJs took 8th place.  Bubba Grills claimed 9th and Dixie Davis Cookers completed the top 10.

In Pulled Pork it was 92 BBQ/Assassin Smoker again for the win with Bubba Grills as runner-up.  Lawdawg BBQ finished in 3rd place. H&J Cook Team with special guest Pitmistress Lois Sebastian, edged out Cooking with Stump for 4th place on a tiebreaker.  Arnarque claimed 6th with The BBQ Ninja in 7th.  Real South BBQ, Rub My Butt BBQ and Hard Rock Hill BBQ finished 8th thru 10th respectively.

Bubba Grills broke up 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers run with the best Rib box of the day. Buster Davis of Smokin’ AJs grabbed second place with 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers taking the 3rd spot.  Lawdawg BBQ came in 4th place. The BBQ Ninja got their third call of the day with a 5th place finish. Smokin’ 42 BBQ grabbed 6th.  Rounding out the top 10 were Anarque, Smokin’ Js, Swine Time Grilling Team and Butt Rubbin’ BBQ.

The Georgia Barbecue Association thanks ComSouth and the Fort Valley Downtown Development Authority for hosting another great state championship event.  The next stop on the GBA trail will be the Grande Creek Pig Jam in Swainsboro on Sept 19-20.

Smokin Grill Captures GBA State Championship

GBA State Champions – Smokin’ Grill BBQ

Thirty six of the best BBQ pitmasters in the state gathered in Fort Valley on September 7-8, 2012 for the 7th Annual ComSouth Hambone Jam and the GBA State Championship.  The cook teams arrived to find a new venue for the competition at the new Festival Park.  The new setup was a huge hit with the cook teams with 50 amp power & water at each cook site.

With a score of 599.4 in Loin Finals, Smokin’ Grill BBQ, pitmaster Sta C Hale, captured the Grand Championship and the GBA State Championship. The champions clamed a cash award of $3,000 for the Grand Championship. The team was also awarded a 36″ semi-insulated smoker from Jack’s Old South Smokers, an invitation to the World Food Championships in Las Vegas, NV and $1,000 in travel money from the GBA. This was the first Grand Championship for Smokin’ Grill BBQ.

Reserve Grand Champion – Smokin’ AJs

Smokin’ AJs  was named Reserve Grand Champion for the highest overall cumulative score in the preliminary rounds with a first place in Pork and second place in Loin.

Following Smokin’ AJ’s in the Pork category was 5 O’clock Somewhere in second place.  Cook’s Portable Smokehouse recorded a perfect score of 600 in the Pork preliminary round and took 3rd place in the finals.  Rounding out the top five were D.W.’s Kountry Cookers and Budmiesters. This was the first GBA competition for Budmiesters.

Jack’s New South is Perfection at Plains Pig Pickin’

Plains Pig Pickin’ 2012 Grand Champions – Jack’s New South

The heat index reached record levels at the Plains Pig Pickin’ 2012, but that didn’t seem to bother Micheal Mixon, Kyle Brooks and Andy Speight of Jack’s New South. They recorded a perfect score of 600 in the Ribs Finals to claim their first Grand Championship.  Holy Smokers rode a second place finish in Ribs, 7th place in Pulled Pork and 9th place in Loin to take the Reserve Grand Championship.

Before the awards ceremony began, GBA President Harry Faircloth and GBA Secretary Pam Nelms presented President & Mrs. Jimmy Carter with personalized GBA aprons and made them honorary members of the Georgia Barbecue Association.  The former President and First Lady  then handed out the awards for the contest.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Plains Pig Pickin’ 2012 First Place Loin – D.W.’s Kountry Cookers

The first category of the contest was Pork Loin. D.W.’s Kountry Cookers claimed the first place trophy. Jack’s New South took second place with Rasmow’s BBQ, in his first GBA finals, taking third. Bubba Grills was fourth place in Pork Loin and SmokinWilly’s Squealers took fifth place  by just 0.4 over Sauced Hogs Smokeshack.

Cook’s Portable Smokehouse also made finals in the GBA for the first time and missed a perfect score in Pulled Pork by 0.3 of a point to claim first place in the category. Butt Rubb’N BBQ, cooking in his first competition ever, captured second place. Sauced Hogs Smokeshack, D.W.’s Kountry Cookers and Smokey Tales rounded out the top five.
