Real South BBQ’s Perfect Ribs Take Grand at Jekyll Island BBQ Beach Bash

The Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) convened on the coast after a couple months down time for the Jekyll Island BBQ Beach Bash. The event, sponsored by the Brunswick Lions Club, is always a favorite of both the GBA cook teams & judges. This year, the weather gods tried their best to put a damper on the event with cold temps, high winds & off and on rain. Twenty seven hardy GBA pitmasters and 12 Cooking for Fun pitmasters adapted and overcame the elements to turn in outstanding ‘Que. In fact, not one but two entries in the contest gained a perfect 600 score from the judges. The contest was also very balanced no single team gained more than one finals round call. Nine different teams qualified for the finals round across the three categories.

Grand Champion – Real South BBQ

Tim Coleman & the Real South BBQ team from Swainsboro tallied one of the perfect 600 scores with their rib entry in the finals round to earn the Grand Championship for the contest. This was the first Grand Championship for Real South BBQ.

Reserve Grand Champion – Southern Hogs.

Southern Hogs, led by Matt Sapp, made finals in ribs and finished 6th in pulled pork and 9th in loin to take home the Reserve Grand Championship. This was also Southern Hogs first Reserve Championship award.

First Place Loin – Old Henry’s BBQ

Clay and Stephanie Beal of Old Henry’s BBQ got the day of “firsts” rolling by claiming thier first category win in loin. Their 599 score in loin finals was just one point away from a perfect score. 92 BBQ, the 2014-2015 GBA Team of the Year, finished second with Smokin’ 42 BBQ coming in third place. Rescue Smokers claimed 4th place by just 0.2 of a point over CJ’s BBQ. 2 Smokin’ Pfat Boyz took 6th place. There was a 3 way tie for 7th place. Doc & Dicie’s BBQ won the tiebreaker. Forget Me Not BBQ was next in the tiebreaker to take 8th place and Southern Hogs took 9th. Lang’s BBQ Cookers rounded out the top 10.

First Place Pork – Rescue Smokers

Robby Royal & Rescue Smokers also came just a single point shy of a perfect score in pulled pork finals. Their 599 score topped the category. Just Pig Out BBQ was the runner up. Daddy O’s BBQ, Brian Bond pitmaster, recorded a perfect 600 score in the preliminary round and finals entry score gave them 3rd place. Barbecue Crew finished 4th, Holy Smokes finished 5th and Southern Hogs finished 6th. Seventh place went to Captain Jack’s & Peachtree while Mojo Smokehouse came in 8th place. CJ’s BBQ won the tie for 9th place over Raging Smoke BBQ.

Real South BBQ’s Grand Championship winning ribs topped the category. Southern Hogs took 2nd place with Forget Me Not BBQ taking 3rd. Holy Smokes BBQ walked in 4th place. The scorers had to go to the tiebreaker once again to determine 5th place. Smokin’ 42 BBQ edged out Captain Jack’s & Peachtree. Seventh place went to Barbecue Crew with 8th place going to Lang BBQ Cookers. Rescue Smokers and Bubba Grills finished 9th & 1oth respectively.

In the Cooking For Fun division, Wilbur’s Smoke Pig BBQ won the pulled pork category. Under Construction BBQ was the runner-up with Odd Brother’s BBQ in 3rd place. The top spot in ribs went to Okeefonokee Smokers. Under Construction BBQ again was the runner-up again and Aloha Soul claimed 3rd.

Holy Smokes Has The Wiggle & Twist To Win Johnson Co.

The first Johnson Co. Wiggle & Twist Festival included a Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) competition. The unique festival name pays tribute to the old Wrightsville & Tennille Railroad. The old rail route had such a winding path that it picked up the nickname “Wiggle & Twist”. The festival and contest were held at the Wrightsville American Legion Post along with the Johnson Co. Chamber of Commerce. A large crowd turned to enjoy the sights & sounds of the BBQ competition; lots of vendors & great music. Holy Smokes, Gary & Dion Lanton, from nearby Dublin won both the Pulled Pork & Rib categories to claim the Grand Championship.

Tifton’s Smokin’ 42 BBQ had a 599.7 preliminary score in Loin along with a 6th place in Pulled Pork and 7th place in Ribs to win the Reserve Grand Championship.

1st Loin – Bubba Grills

In the Loin finals, Bubba Grills edged Rescue Smokers by just 0.4 of a point to win the category. Smokin’ 42 BBQ finished third. The competition was close throughout the field as there was a 3 way tie for 4th place between Fiddlers BBQ, CaJenn Smokin Q and H & J Cooking Team. Fiddlers BBQ won the tiebreaker to take 4th place. CaJenn then won the next tiebreaker for 5th and H & J took 6th place. Georgia Boys claimed 7th place just ahead of Johnson Boys BBQ in 8th. Ninth place went to Real South BBQ and Holy Smokes got the 10th place call.

The Pulled Pork finals was almost as close as the Loin finals. Holy Smokes won the category by only 0.8 of a point over Real South BBQ. Old Henry’s BBQ may have gotten the loudest ovation of the day with their 3rd place call. The BBQ Ninja took 4th place; Georgia Boys took 5th and Smokin’ 42 BBQ took 6th place. Southern Hogs edged Bubba Grills for 7th place by 0.3 of a point. CaJenn Smokin’ Q and H & J Cooking Team finished 9th & 10th respectively.

Holy Smokes Grand Championship winning Ribs topped the category. Fiddler’s BBQ was the runner up. Fat Daddy P’s BBQ, in the first competition, got the 3rd place call. Rescue Smokers grabbed 4th place with The BBQ Ninja in 5th. Sixth place went to H & J Cooking Team with 7th place going to Smokin’ 42 BBQ. Real South BBQ took 8th place. Johnson Boys BBQ walked in 9th place and Bubba Grills rounded out the top 10.

In the Cooking for Fun Division, Mama’s Que & Stew won the Pulled Pork category with Big Papa BBQ in 2nd & Smokin’ Snowballs in 3rd. In Cooking for Fun Ribs, Big Papa BBQ walked last. Master Basters took 2nd and Smokin’s Snowballs, again, took 3rd place.

The GBA thanks all the coordinators and volunteers of the Johnson Co. Wiggle & Twist for their outstanding hospitality including a delicious Friday evening welcome dinner for all the teams & GBA officials. A Near Perfect Day for Rescue Smokers

The 2015-2016 competition season for the Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) got off to a unbelievable start at the Doc Holiday BBQ & Blues Festival in downtown Griffin. On the Pro competiton, 39 of the top teams in the state turned out to try and grab the early lead in the Team of the Year competition as Double Points were on the line. There were also 5 Cooking for Fun division teams. The contest also featured Friday ancillaries in Sauce, Wings & Dessert. There was also a special Saturday Brisket Shootout competition.

The level of competition was on display right off the bat in Pork Loin as three teams — Bubba Grills, Dixie Q & Rescue Smokers — each tallied a perfect 600 score in the preliminary round. Smokin’ 42 BBQ missed the 4th perfect score in Loin by just 0.3 of a point. Rescue Smokers pulled their second 600 score of the day in the Pulled Pork preliminary round.

Robby Royal of Rescue Smokers near perfect day ended with the last call as Grand Champion of the contest. Lonnie Smith and the Bubba Grills team strong showing across all three categories earned the Reserve Grand Champion award.

First Place Loin – Dixie Q

Breaking ties with perfect scores often comes down to the dreaded coin toss. In the GBA, however, the top three teams in each category advance to the Finals rounds where they prepare another turn in box to be scored by a select panel of Finals judges. So, the three teams with perfect scores go to settle it with a head to head to head matchup.

Rick Godfrey of Dixie Q got the top score in the Loin finals round to win the category. Rescue Smokers took second place with Bubba Grills taking third. Smokin’ 42 BBQ came in 4th place. Johnson Boys BBQ, in their first GBA contest, finished 5th with Dobey Q finishing sixth. Forget Me Not BBQ took 7th place, Daddy-O’s BBQ took 8th, 92 BBQ took 9th and Fiddlers BBQ took 10th place.

Rescue Smokers had the top finals round Pulled Pork score for the win. Johnson Boys BBQ was the runner-up with Southern Hogs in 3rd place. Bubba Grills grabbed 4th place followed by CaJenn BBQ in 5th and Rub My Butt in 6th place. Seventh place went to We Want Que and 8th place went to Dixie Q. Smokin 42 BBQ & The BBQ Ninja finished 9th & 10th respectively.

The BBQ Ninja took top honors in Ribs. 92 BBQ took second place with Smokin the Good Stuff in third. For third place, Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team edged out Fiddlers BBQ who came in fourth. Sixth place went to We Want Que just ahead of Rescue Smokers in 7th place. Rub My Butt, Simply Q and Daddy-O’s BBQ rounded out the top 10.

Rescue Smokers continued their domination of the day by winning the Brisket Challenge. Captain Jack’s Freedom BBQ Team took 2nd place with Smokin 42 BBQ taking 3rd. The BBQ Ninja grabbed 4th place and Dobey Q took 5th.

In the Cooking For Fun Division, Badonkadonk won Pulled Pork with Mama’s Que & Stew in 2nd and Burnt Offering Cooking Crew in third. In Ribs, Burnt Bermuda BBQ took top honors with Badonkadonk as runner-up and Mama’s Que & Stew taking third.

Smokin 42 BBQ Rules at Three Rivers Festival

After battling the elements over the past few contests, the teams of the Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) found picture perfect weather for the Three Rivers Festival at Towns Bluff Park. The teams responded by turning in outstanding BBQ. A common theme among the judges was how tough it was to pick a favorite among so many great entries. In the end, it was the Finals round Pulled Pork entry turned in by Smokin’ 42 BBQ of Tifton that got the last call of the day as Grand Champion.

Grand Champion – Smokin’ 42 BBQ

CaJenn Smokin’ Que of Hoboken had the highest cumulative score across all three categories in the preliminary rounds to take the Reserve Champion award.

1st Loin – Bethel Smokers

Bethel Smokers of Douglas captured the first place award in Pork Loin. CaJenn Smokin’ Que edge out Just Blowing Smoke of Canton for second place by 0.3 of a point. LawDawg BBQ from Brunswick took third place. Just Smoke N Around of Jackson took 5th place by 1/10th of a point over Smokin’ 42 BBQ, Seventh place went to Lizzy Lou of Middleburg, FL. Swainsboro’s Real South BBQ came in 8th place in Pork Loin with 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers of Griffin in 9th place and H & J Cooking Team of Vienna in 10th place

First place in Pulled Pork went to Smokin’ 42 BBQ with 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers as the runner-up. Dobey Q of Buena Vista captured 3rd place. Just Smoke N Around captured 4th place and Real South BBQ captured 5th place. Just 7/10th of a point separated 6th place from 9th place. in 6th place, it was LawDawg BBQ just ahead of Bubba Grills of Haddock in 7th place with Buffalo Chip BBQ of Hazlehurst taking 8th place and Mojo Smokehouse of Willcoochee taking 9th place. CaJenn Smokin’ Que rounded out the top 10 in Pulled Pork.

1st Ribs – Bubba Grills

Bubba Grills topped the Ribs category. Dobey Q took 2nd with Just Blowing Smoke taking 3rd place. CaJenn Smokin’ Que walked for the 4th place award with Buffalo Chip BBQ in 5th place. Real South BBQ grabbed 6th place and Smokin’ J’s of Dallas, GA grabbe 7th place. The 8th place call went out to Bethel Smokers. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers finished in 9th place in Ribs with Smokin’ 42 BBQ taking 10th place.

The GBA wants to thank the staff at Towns Bluff Park for hosting the contest at one of the best venue’s on our circuit. Thanks also to the Hazlehurst-Jeff Davis Co. Board of Tourism for organizing the contest. The GBA heads north to Acworth for Smoke on the Lake on May 8-9 then to Lake Walter F George in Fort Gaines for the White Oak Pastures BBQ Challenge on May 22-23. Bubba Grills Takes Grand at Smokin’ Pork N Butts

There are a couple of things you can count on at Smokin’ Pork N Butts in Jackson. Great BBQ and Rain. Mud boots were almost as essential as grills, charcoal & wood as steady rain pelted the event for most of the weekend. In spite of the challenging conditions, the teams still made the judges work hard to determine who had the best BBQ of the day.

Fiddlers BBQ made finals in all three categories. Southern Hogs finaled in Loin & Pulled Pork. However, it was Bubba Grills Rib entry that recorded the top score in the final rounds to claim the Grand Championship.

Grand Champion – Bubba Grills

Harvery & Shirley Wills of Fiddlers BBQ, with an assist from Master Judge candidate Greg Sebastian, “Triple Finaled” and accumulated the most points in the preliminary rounds to win the Reserve Champion award.

Reserve Champion – Fiddlers BBQ

Pork Loin is always a difficult category, but the scorers had to go to the tiebreaker to determine the winner in the category. Both Fiddler’s BBQ and LawDawg BBQ scored 594.4 in the final round of Loin judging. The GBA declares “Its All About the Taste” and the Taste scores are the first level in the tiebreaker. Fiddler’s BBQ had the highest taste score & edged LawDawg for first place. LawDawg BBQ had a perfect 600 score in the preliminary Loin round. Southern Hogs grabbed third place. Que the Musick took 4th place with Just Blowing Smoke taking fifth. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers took 6th place by winning the tiebreaker over Smokin J’s BBQ. Eighth place went to Bubba Grills; 9th place went to Smoke Shack BBQ and 10th went to Main Street BBQ.

Southern Hogs

In Pulled Pork, it was Fiddlers BBQ once again taking top honors. Southern Hogs finished as runner-up with Que the Musick in third place. Main Street BBQ got the 4th place call and Fletcher’s Finest got 5th place. Smokin the Good Stuff edged Real South BBQ for 6th place on the tiebreaker. Just Blowing Smoke also edged LawDawg BBQ in the tiebreaker for 8th place. Bubba Grills rounded out the top 10.

The Grand Championship winning Rib entry earned first place for Bubba Grills. Fiddlers BBQ completed their strong cook with the 2nd place award. Smokin the Good Stuff took 3rd place, but also had a perfect 600 score in the preliminary round. BCD (Boys Cooking Dangerously) came in 4th place. Hootie Q edged 29 BBQ by 0.1 of a point to take 5th place. Just Blowing Smoke captured 7th place and Smoke Shack BBQ captured 8th place. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers & Rub Shakers Que finished 9th & 10th respectively.

Once again Connie & Wayne Rosser of the Butt County Exchange Club did an outstanding job managing the contest in trying conditions. The GBA heads to the Three Rivers Festival and Towns Bluff Park on the Altamaha River in Hazlehurst on May 1-2. The following week it will be Smoke on the Water on beautiful Lake Acworth. The month of May completes the water based trifecta with the 1st Annual White Oak Pastures BBQ Challenge on Lake Walter F George in Fort Gaines on May 22-23.
