Back to Back Grands for 29 Barbeque

The Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) plowed into the Durhamtown Off Road Park near Union Point for the Durhamtown Spring Jam & BBQ Cook-off. While the slick red clay mud was a delight for the 4 Wheelers & Dirt Bikers, it presented some challenges to the Pitmasters. The GBA cooks were up for the conditions & turned in some outstanding ‘Que The competition was close as 16 teams vied for the final calls. The competition was so tight that the GBA reps had to go to break a tie for the Grand Championship.

In the Finals, 29 Barbeque’s Pulled Pork box & Dobey Q’s Loin box both tallied a score of 597 from the final’s judges. The GBA motto is “It’s All About the Taste” and the Taste criteria is the first level in the tiebreaker system. 29 Barbeque’s scored 0.04 higher in the Taste criteria than Dobey Q to win the Grand Championship.

Bubba Grills made finals in both Loin & Ribs and added a 10th place finish in Pulled Pork to tally the top cumulative score in the preliminary rounds and take home the Reserve Champion award.

First Place Loin – Dobey Q

Dobey Q’s 597 score in Loin topped the category by just 0.2 over Fiddler’s BBQ. Bubba Grills took 3rd place. 29 Barbeque edged LawDawg BBQ by 0.04 of a point for 4th place. Sixth place went to Main Street BBQ and 7th place went to Real South BBQ. Southern Hogs, H & J Cooking Team & 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers rounded out the top 10.

29 Barbeque had the best Pulled Pork of the day with Main Street BBQ taking 2nd place & We Want Que taking 3rd place. Smoke Shack BBQ grabbe 4th place; 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers grabbed 4th and H & J Cooking Team pulled down 6th place. Real South BBQ once again captured 7th place with Master Basters capturing 8th place. Ninth place went to Dobey Q and 10th place went to Bubba Grills.

First Place Ribs – 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers

92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers got the last call in the Ribs category. Smokin’ the Good Stuff was runner-up with Bubba Grills taking 3rd place. Smoke Shack BBQ got their second 4th place call of the day and Fiddlers BBQ got the call for 5th place. Dobey Q got their third call of the day for 6th place and H & J Coooking team also got a third call with a 7th place finish. In 8th place was Southern Hogs just 0.3 ahead of 29 Barbeque in 9th place. Tenth place went to We Want Que.

Durhamtown also hosted a GBA sanctioned Cooking for Fun division contest. Cooking for Fun consists of Pulled Pork and Ribs. It is one round of competition only with no finals round as in the GBA Pro division. Six teams competed in the Cooking For Fun Division.

Southern Accents took first place in Pulled Pork. White Racing Team topped the Ribs category. Fine Azz Swine was the runner-up in both cateories and Screaming Eagle BBQ took 3rd place in both as well,

The GBA has three great contests on tap for April starting with Hawkinsville’s Smokin’ the Track followed by Bikes, Blues & BBQ in Douglas and Smokin’ Pork N Butts in Jackson.

29 Barbeque Wins First GBA Grand at Hitachi Walton Co BBQ Festival

Barry Spayberry and 29 Barbeque took first place honors in both Pulled Pork and Ribs, but it was the Rib entry that edged out Pulled Pork box for highest score in the Finals rounds to win the Grand Championship at the Hitachi Walton Co BBQ Festival. Twenty five teams turned out for the first year event with many of the teams competing in the GBA for the first time.

Reserve Champions – Just Blowing Smoke

Just Blowing Smoke was the runner up in both Loin and Pulled Pork as well as 7th in Ribs to claim the Reserve Championship for the second contest in a row.

Kerry Sparks and Lawdawg BBQ recorded a perfect 600 score in the Loin preliminary round to lead the way into the finals rounds. They followed that up with the top entry in the finals round to take first place. Just Blowing Smoke was second. Third place went to Forget Me Not BBQ with 29 Barbeque taking 4th place. Smoking Armadillo was 5th, 4 K’s BBQ was 6th and Simply Q was 7th place. Eighth through 10th places went to DCR BBQ, Smokin’ Suwanee Sweetmeats and Porch Light respectively.

29 Barbeque led the way in Pulled Pork with Just Blowing Smoke once again in 2nd place. Porkinator took home 3rd place. Hootie Q came in 4th place. Smokin’ Suwanee Sweetmeats was 0.3 of a point better than Hitachi for 5th place. Southern Hog won the tiebreaker for 7th place over Simply Q. Lawdawg BBQ claimed 9th place with Georgia Smoke BBQ claiming 10th.

In Ribs, it was 29 Barbeque once again at the top. Porkinator edged out Smokin’ Armadillo for second place by just 0.2 of a point. Smokin’ Suwanee Sweetmeats completed their strong showing with a 4th place finish in the category. 4 K’s BBQ took 5th with DCR BBQ taking 6th place. Just Blowing Smoke came in 7th. Old Henry’s BBQ took 8th place by winning the tiebreaker over Porch Light. Sharbite BBQ rounded out the top 10.

Next up for the GBA is the Durhamtown Spring Fling & BBQ Contest on March 20-21. Three great contests are on tap for April in the GBA: Hawkinsville’s Smokin’ the Track on April 3-4; Bikes Blues & BBQ in Douglas on April 10-11 and Smokin’ Pork N Butts in Jackson on April 17-18.

Dobey Q Walks Last at the Beach Bash

Grand Champion – Dobey Q

The Brunswick Lions Club’s Jekyll BBQ Beach Bash has become one of the biggest events on Jekyll Island. Thirty of the top teams in the Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) gathered at the beach in Great Dune Park and the level of competition was off the charts. In the end, the last call of the day went to David Hair and Dobey Q who walked away with the Grand Championship.

Reserve Champion – Bubba Grills

Lonnie Smith debuted the new Bubba Grills T3 Steam. With the innovative new cooker, Bubba Grills got two finals calls to take the Reserve Grand Championship.

First Place Pulled Pork – Bethel Smokers

Dobey Q’s Grand Championship Loin entry won the category. Kevin McKinney of Hungry Hogs BBQ was the runner up with Barbecue Crew taking third place. Smoke Risin’ took 4th place with Just Blowing Smoke in 5th and Smoke Shack BBQ in 6th place. Seventh place went to Just Pig Out and 8th place went to Smokin’ the Good Stuff. Southern Hogs edged out Rescue Smokers for 9th place by 0.1 of a point

Joe Wright & Bethel Smokers topped the Pulled Pork category over Bubba Grills in second place and Rescue Smokers in third. Just Blowing Smoke took 4th place. Just Pig Out claimed 5th place by 0.3 of a point over Barbecue Crew who claimed 6th place by another 0.3 of a point over Smokin’ AJs. Smoke Risin’ won the 5th tiebreaker to take 8th place over 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers. Tenth place went to Southern Hogs.

Bubba Grills got the first place call in Ribs. 29 Barbecue captured 2nd place with Real South BBQ in third. Rescue Smokers edged Smokin’ AJs by 0.3 of a point for 4th place. Sixth place went to Naked Daves by only 0.1 of a point over The Hurricane Cookers. Once again, there was a tie for 8th place & this one went to the 4th tiebreaker. Smoke Shack BBQ won the tiebreaker which put Just Blowing Smoke in 9th place. Bethel Smokers rounded out the top 10.

The Jekyll Island BBQ Beach Bash also had a backyard division. Julie Weprek & Mama’s Que-N-Stew won both Pulled Pork & Ribs. LawDawg BBQ II took second place in Pulled Pork and Wcked Lickin’ BBQ Crew took second in Ribs.

Next up for the GBA is Rythm & Ribs in Tifton on March 6-7. The following week the GBA heads north for the Hitachi Walton Co BBQ Festival on March 13-14 with the Durhamtown Spring Jam & BBQ Cookoff on March 20-21.

Just Blowin’ Smoke Wins the Shootout at Doc Holiday Festival

The GBA made its debut at the Doc Holiday Festival in downtown Griffin, GA and it turned into a 3 way shootout for the Grand Championship. In the end, the Loin entry by Robin Bowles & Just Blowin’ Smoke topped the Pulled Pork box by Dixie Que’s Rick Godfrey and the Ribs entry of Gary Lanton of Holy Smokes.

Dixie Que finaled in Pulled Pork, finished 6th in Ribs and 11th in Loin to take the Reserve Championship for the top cumulative score in the three preliminary rounds.

Just Blowin’ Smoke’s championship Loin box topped the category. Two Fat Boys & A Grill came in second with Rolling Smoke Competition Que in third place. Swine Time Grillin’ Team took fourth place. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers edged Bearded BBQ for fifth place on the tiebreaker. Real South BBQ grabbed seventh place and RTC Smokin’ grabbed eighth place. Fiddler’s BBQ in ninth and H & J Cooking Team in tenth rounded out the top 10,

Dixie Que won Pulled Pork with Just Blowin’ Smoke the runner-up. Fiddler’s BBQ came in third with H & J Cooking Team in fourth. Swine Time Grillin’ Team nailed down the fifth spot. Sixth place went to Rub Shakers Que and seventh place went to Old Henry’s BBQ. In eight place was Holy Smokes; in ninth place was Smokin’ J’s and in tenth place was Real South BBQ.

Holy Smokes had the best box of Ribs on the day. Two Fat Boys & A Grill took second place with 29 Barbecue taking third place. 92 BBQ/Assassin Smokers edged out Rub Shakers Que for fourth place by 0.3 of a point. Dixie Que finished in the sixth spot. In seventh place was Fiddler’s BBQ with RTC Smokin’ in eighth place. Real South BBQ and Just Blowin’ Smoke tied for ninth place with Real South BBQ coming out on top in the tiebreaker.

The Doc Holiday Festival also held a GBA sanctioned Cooking for Fun contest. The GBA’s Cooking for Fun division competes in two categories: Pulled Pork and Ribs. Simply Q topped Swine Dining in Pulled Pork. Swine Dining returned the favor by topping Simply Q to win the Ribs category.

Back to Back Grands for Smokin’ 42 BBQ

The “Black Train” from Tifton, GA is on a serious roll in the Georgia Barbecue Assocation. Fresh off a Grand Championship earlier this month in their hometown contest, Smokin’ 42 BBQ made it two Grands in a row with a win at the Durhamtown Moonshiners BBQ Festival in Union Point, GA. As in Tifton, the team’s Pork Loin entry was the highest scoring box in the finals round.

Grand Champion – Smokin’ 42 BBQ

Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack made finals in all three categories at Durhamtown. That strong overall performance earned the Reserve Grand Champion trophy wotj the highest cumulative score in the three preliminary rounds. In the preliminary Ribs competition, TC’s BBQ recorded a perfect score to become the newest member of the GBA’s 600 club.

Reserve Grand Champion – Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack

Smokin’ 42 BBQ’s Grand Championship Pork Loin entry led the way in the category. Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack was the runner up. H & J Cooking Crew took third place. Clay & Sephanie Beal of Old Henry’s BBQ got the fourth place call with Bubba Grills rounding out the top five.

Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack had the best Pulled Pork box of the day. Smokin the Good Stuff came in second with H & J Cooking Crew once again finishing third. TC’s BBQ captured fourth place. Bubba Grills took fifth place just a half point ahead of Rub My Butt.

29 Barbecue and Sauced Hogs Smoke Shack tied for first Ribs. 29 Barbecue took the top spot on the first tiebreaker. TC’s BBQ came in third place. Old Henry’s BBQ got their second fourth place call of the day and Bubba Grills took fifth place for the third time in the contest.

The GBA also sanctioned a Cooking for Fun contest at Durhamtown. Screaming Eagle took first place in Pulled Pork with Southern Accent taking second place. Komado Kommandos scored a perfect 600 in the Ribs contest with Screaming Eagle as runner up. Screaming Eagle had the highest cumulative score for the two categories to claim the Grand Championship.

The Georgia Barbecue Association would like to thank the Durhamtown Plantation staff for their outstanding hospitality and for putting together a great contest at a very unique venue.

The next stop on the GBA contest trail will be Bikes, Blues & BBQ in Douglas on March 28 & 29. In April the GBA will return to Jackson, Ga for Smokin’ Pork N Butts on April 18-19. In May, the GBA heads to Hazlehurst for the Three Rivers BBQ Fest on May 2-3 then the following weekend will be in Acworth for Smoke on the Lake on May 9-10.
